Humming Rotel RB-991 - HELP

Hi guys,

Need your help. I have purchased a used Rotel RB-991 Amp that has a very loud hum (no it doesn't know the words :p ). I have both my AVR and the amp going through a Belkin Pure AV power board, to condition the power, so that shouldn't be an issue?

I have moved the Rotel far away from any sources of interference, but still the same annoying hum. I note on some other similar questions, there is mention of a ground loop issue. What is actually meant by this - is it an internal problem within the amp, or is it something external you do to fix the problem?

So far, my dream of 200 watts a channel hasn't quite been that. Not my day really, as I received also a brand new Oppo DV-980 today that I ordered directly from Oppo, but the tray won't open :( . If I was in the US, probably could go and swap it easily, but as I'm in the land down under, not so simple :( .

Anyway, any tips on my humming going will be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

    Here's a good link

Bottom line- it's a common problem.
In telecommunications, we go out of our way to prevent the problem.
It causes mayhem with equipment and invites lightning damage. In
home audio, It's just a annoyance.

    Thanks S2BM,

Interesting read! I think it might be my cable TV possibly causing the hum. I haven't had the opportunity yet to eliminate the causes, but will do later today. I literally have had no issues prior to the amp with the cable TV, but I suppose the 200 watts highlights the effect.

PS - Oppo were great and are sending me a replacement unit - excellent customer service :D
