Polk SRTs?

I'm not sure if this is the model I'm thinking of but I recall Polk making a pair of high end home theater type speakers with separate dual subs (I don't recall a center channel with this so perhaps it wasn't for HT). I think it also had an outboard eq or high pass filter of sorts. The whole set up was pretty expensive at the time. I never got to listen to them though. Was this the SRT? If so, whatever happened to them as you never hear of them (at least I don't) Man, I hate having CRS issues...

    Yes, that was the SRT.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

The SRT system is very rare and still expensive. I think they only sold about 500 of these systems. A few of our members here have them. I understand the sound is exceptional. Good luck finding them!

It would be easier and cheaper to get a top of the line set of HT speakers in the Polk LSi line than to find a SRT system.

There is an SRT center ...

The outboard "controller" is more for dealing with the subs then anything else ...

There are still sets of these around although they aren't seen often ... Probably ecause I don't think there were a lot of them made.

There were only 250 complete sets made.
They were sold either in stereo pairs for music, 5 channel surround sound consisting of 2 stereo pairs with a dedicated center and 2 ls fx for rear surround or custom configured with as many as 4 stereo pairs, a main sattelite as main center or 2 center speakers mounted vertically with 2 extra subwoofers and 3 controllers.

    The SRT SEISMIC System:
Four main satellite speakers, six powered subs, two dedicated for LFE channel, two center speakers for over/under screen placement and three Control Centers. Amaze your friends, terrorize your neighbors, seize the audio bragging rights for your state. Go ahead, buy it; you only go around once.

The srt controller is just an active crossover for the subs, a sda controller for the mains and has a built in isolation transformer in case you want to biamp the srts.

I saw them advertised for 1,500 Would they be worth anywhere near this price ? I am local enough to go check them out if the trip would be worth it.

It's a 3 hour drive one way....I have a friend who lives within 50 miles of there who let me know about the SRT's ( Locally advertised ) ...I will call the guy today. I need speakers like I need a hole in the head :) , but its a low enough price to warrant purchasing to play with the system for a while.

Just got off the phone with the guy....speakers are in great shape with only a couple of small minor scratches ...guy was very honest in saying all of the drivers worked perfectly except for one driver on one of the rear surround speakers ( No big deal...can either fix ( If driver avail ) or supplement a different pair of rear surrounds ) .

He has all speakers from the original set along with the controller as well. For those on here that have the system, how difficult will transporting these be ? Should I transport them face down to keep gravity ( And road bumps ) from dislodging/misaligning any magnets ? I am an SDA trivia buff, but I know nothing about this system at all...and cant find squat on the net ? Anybody have a link to a review ?

Basically just getting these to test them...play with them....they will not be installed into my HT ( I built all of my own speakers along with a subwoofer on every channel ) ...these will be going in a spare bedroom to play with.

Also, to those that have these...what is the finish on these speakers ? They are black but is it a woodgrain finished black, or a type of vinyl ?

    They are woodgrain finish ...

As far as trsnsporting them goes ...

Assuming you have a full set i.e. main subs & satallites, center, surrounds, controller etc ... you got 7-8 cartons weighing 350-450 pounds. Plan accordingly.

If they're in good shape, $1500 is a steal.

Great, thanks for the reply :) It is in fact the full set...but he does not have the original boxes...so transporting them is gonna be fun. I will be going in my truck ( Short bed but full sized rear seats that fold up ) ...so I will take plenty of bubble wrap and foam .

At 289 miles one way that puts it at around 600 miles round trip ( Picking up a friend along the way )...at 12 miles to the gallon / 3.00 a gallon here in CA...add like 150 bucks for gas...so like 1,650 for the SRT system to my door.

Any reason there is so little information on these online ? I cant find one single review ? Even polks web page dedicated to the SRT shows no specifications whatsoever...there is a page for specs...nothing clickable ?

Any information from all of the masters on this forum would be GREATLY appreciated.

There was more information available here awhile ago ...

I have some doc somewhere ...

Let us know what you have if anything after you get them and we'll try and fill in the missing pieces.

I think I posted some wiring and other diagrams along with some specs in the last year or two which you should be able to find here.

Thank you for anything you can find on these....I searched the forums and found 7 hits...most of them concerning guys with 1 or 2 posts total trying to sell them on the forums here...for like 4,000 !!! So I guess 1,500 isn't too bad afterall. I just cant believe there is so little on these on the web...it really is strange. Again thank you for anything you can find

You is da Man !! That was exactly what I was looking for...I dont know why my srt thread search didnt come up with that ? So it looks like you have to run a separate SDA cable to each front sat speaker from the controller ...no wonder the guy told me he was throwing in a lot of monster cable with them :) I like the controller as well.....I can't wait till tomorrow...I will post up pics as well.

These were Matt Polks HT statement piece and as such a full set retailed for about $10K so I believe there were only a very limited number produced about 100 sets is what I remember.

Others should chime in that know more details.

Thanks, Yes I had seen that page...but when you click on specifications it shows like 3 types of specifications...but none of them are clickable ? Really strange, you would think they would have more info on a flagship system then they have for any other model ? I guess the system is showing its age...when I was looking at the block diagram in wannabie's link...it showed as an input Laser disc player :) I thought that was great

The products page on this site isn't the greatest for giving very detailed info on old products. Since there are only a 100 or so in exsistnece I can see why they wouldn't put a lot of effort in keeping the web page current.

It seems there was a on-line review somewhere that I read at one time. Keep using Google maybe it will come up. BTW, your are stealing these speakers if they are in good playable shape. :D

    H9,

The page you posted a link to has a bunch of links on it to other pages which used to have lots of SRT related info i.e. pictures of the center speaker, spec's for the different pieces etc. Unfortuantely most of the links go back to the home page now.

    Shadow,

There are NO SDA cables per se ... It's speaker wire from amp(s) to controller and from controller to the satellites for at least the SDA Array ... The Stereo Array does not have to go through the controller.

The satellites themselves can be biamped or triamped if desired i.e. tweeter, the rest of stereo array, SDA array and as you can tell from the wiring diagrams I provided a link to there are many ways to hook them up.

The subs are connected how subs are usually connected although mine are set up a little differently as they had custom work done to them to allow use of an outboard amp rather than the enclosed plate amps. As a result mine are connected via speaker wire. I'm using the not often seen SRT SDA Rears in the back which require a second SRT controller and FX/1000's on the sides.

My wiring set up looks like the attached.

You might be rethinking your statement about not using them in HT once you've had them for awhile ... I'll be interested to hear your impressions ...

What are you thinking of powering them with ...
