i have an LCD.
i use my PC as my main source so it pays to have an LCD vs Plasma.
Plasmas are better color wise but they run hotter and use a lot more electricity. DLP's are bigger cheaper but you got to watch for the rainbow effect. dont know much more about DLP's
LCD's dont have good blacks and response times are slow but they are about the same profile as a plasma and use less electricity and they have dont suffer from burn in and glare problems that you get with a Plasma. -
Depends on where you're going to use it. With 6 windows in our family room a 47" LCD was the obvious choice for us. In the basement recroom where there is more control of the light - plasma. The only bad thing about plasma is there is a size jump from 42"to 50" - nothing in between.

I agree...We have a very bright family room so I got an LCD..plus it was only 768p, so I got a rediculous deal on it..
I'm sure a plasma would be more impressive, but I don't have a plasma next to my LCD to compare it to...so ignorance is bliss:DPioneer Elite VSX-53, Polk RT800i fronts, Polk CS400i center, FX500i surround, Velodyne sub -
Just get a CRT to many problems with the others. I have many of friends and family who have had all 3 and they all have had some sort of problem with them. DLP light engine goes bad bulb goes bad, LCD dead pixils power supply goes bad, PLASMA burn in power supply goes bad and many other issues. None of them has had any of these 3 technologys for more than 3 years without some sort of problem. I think it sucks when 1 of my freinds buys an awsome new HDTV and a year later his CRT is sitting in its place seen it happen to many times. Dont hear about many problems with CRT sure its not HD and size limited but at least I know I will get at least 10 years out of it if not more. there all 3 very impressive TV's just dont seam to be reliable, just my opinion.TV: Philips 42" LCD 1080p

A co worker has had a DLP for less than a year and its bulb has gone bad.
the LCD i have is 1080p i see there are about 3 pixels that have issues but with the hugh number of pixels they cant be noticed. if you find a tv you like go to avsforum they have tons of info there. -

Maybe your co-worker bought a demo set, maybe he leaves it on all the time, but the average is about 2 yrs for bulb life.Never had a problem with dead pixels on my LCD.But the problem I did have was smoke, from me and the fireplace.DLP and LCD have a fan in the back that sucks in air to cool the bulb.Don't smoke or place near a wood burning fireplace or you will be replaceing the engine at roughly 1800.00 clams, and that translates to throw it away.HT SYSTEM-

Thats my point it shouldnt matter if it is a demo set or if he leaves it on 24/7 your $2000 TV should last more than a few years. Dont get me wrong I love watching HDTV programming on my friends and family new HDTV's when there working. Im not hating on DLP,PLASMA, or LCD they all have beutiful pictures im just hating on there reliability. I will buy the first 1 that will last longer than 5 years, like CRT at least 10 years even if left on for 24/7. ok im done ranting now.TV: Philips 42" LCD 1080p

There's not a television set that doesn't have any trouble. And I don't to many Picture Tubes can work for 10 years 24/7/365 without looking like Shitt. Maybe NEC but I wouldn't bet on it.

Well considering I bought the 4 year warranty at Ultimate Electronics, I'm willing to bet my LCD lasts at least 4 years without issues..If I didnt buy the plan, it would go out before that:D

Do yourself a favor, bring your favorite DVD to the place you want to purchase a tv from and play it on all 3 types of HDTV's that you want to try out then pick one. I have 2 plasmas in my home, and I have never had a problem with them and Ihave had them for almost 2 years now. Burn-in will only happen on crappy plasmas and if you leave a still picture on the screen for a very long time. I play video games for hours on end almost every day and have never had a burn-in problem. And when it comes to glare every tv has issues with glare. My main plasma is in my living room with windows all around the room including a nice size bay window to the right of it. I watch tv at all hours and never really had a glare problem that caused me any grief. Like I said you have to be the judge for yourself. I would suggest neither or those mentioned in the thread title. Go front projection and go larger on your screen.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I personally like the picture of the new lcd's but own 2 grand wega lcd projo's (46" and 42") cause I like that I dont get any digital squaring during sports. What I've seen at the store I work at is the new samsung LED DLP's have an insanely real picture like looking out a window. The problems with DLP though is I've seen personally 30 or more customers with bulb problems in the first year or two. But the LED bulbs in these new dlp's are supposed to be way more reliable.2 CHANNEL

Of course its personal taste ...but for me Plasma is the best. Everybody I know with Plasmas has had zero problems...My first 42" ED Panny Plasma from many moons ago still works flawlessly with zero burn-in ( Gave that to my sister ) ...next came my 42" HD Panny Plasma...again zero issues...no burn-in ( Gave that to my parents...believe me if burn-in was going to be an issue...my dad falling asleep with the coin channel on would have done it...none whatsoever ) . With the Pannys..prior to the 8th generation panels you had to really be careful about static images on the screen...since the 9th generation it hasnt been an issue
Both myself and one of my friends picked up the new 58" Panny Plasma....it MADE the Home theatre Always had the killer sound...now I have the visual POP to go with it.
Direct view LCD's are fine...I have a 37" 1080P Westy in the bedroom...very happy with it.
I have never liked Projection LCD or DLP ( I like the saying " Friends dont let friends buy DLP " ) They might get better in the future...but for now...not for me.
Those are MY preferences...the best advice for yourself is pick a budget...and go find one that looks good to YOU. Just be sure to compare with like sources and dont go on brightness alone in the store...most will be in torch mode...adjust them yourself to see the range of adjustment...etc
Have fun.The first rule of Fight Club is you don't talk about Fight Club -
Hi. I just bought a Sammy 50" plasma last week. INSANE picture. I love it. It has burn-in protection (pixel shift) and is aesthetically pleasing. I got for $1570 shipped from Amazon. Read my review:

I've got a 50" 1080p Samsung Plasma and could not be happier.

Samsung LED light, supposed to last the life of the Tv?
Mitsubishi "TurboLight"? 15% brighter? Wouldnt that use up the bulb faster?
Sony?
I'm a big fan (excuse the pun) of both.
I have read about all 3 DLP's, I'm so confused.
The only thing that has me leaning towards the Samsung is the LED technology.
Compared to my CRT Mit, all of those tv's are brighter sharper and more vibrant.Monitor 7b's front

Where did you get it? How much? If you don't mind me asking. PM if you don't want it public. I am so happy with mine.
-
I got mine at HH Gregg. Like a BB or CC. I paid $1590 + tax. And I got 1 year free financing. I actually bought 2 plasmas that day. The other is a Hitachi P42H401.
-
That's cool. Decent price for a big box store. The BB here wanted $1800 for an open box.

If you don't mind the larger footprint of a rear projection tv, I would suggest the Samsung LED DLP. To me, it is the most maintenance free tv around. There is absolutely no way for picture burn-in (all other technologies including LCD are prone to that issue). Using LED's instead of the UHP lamp makes perfect sense; LED is more effecient and they can last up to 20 years without degradation. Plus it does away with the color wheel and the rainbow effect associated with it. The DMMD device is only manufactured by TI which to me, gives a better assurance of quality control. Like I said before every other technology out there has issues with burn-in and it is impossible to burn an image onto mirrors (unless you believe that light is a particle and not a wave but that's a topic to be discussed on it own). The only drawback to the rear projection micro-displays is the viewing angle and there ability to compete with ambient light but if that can be controlled, I would say LED DLP hands down. IMHOSystem:

Twin plasmas and happy. 42" on the wall in master, and 50" in LR on pedestal. If I needed an outdoor signage display, I'd get the LCD. Are there people still buying DLP's with the price on flat panel this low?-Ignorance is strength -

Low ? ... Is there a decent 70+" 1080p plasma for < $3k ?
