On that note-- isn't it not ALWAYS a good idea to have surrounds above your head? I know it's good to have them higher, but what about voices and other effects in the side channels that shouldn't necessarily be ABOVE your head?

voices rarely come out of surround speakers.. voices almost always come from the center and fronts.

trust me on this.. after 8 years of having my surrounds placed above my head.. i have never heard a movie whereby the surround sound wasn't right. the FX series of surround speakers.. diffuse the sound enough, unlike direct firing speakers which you can localize the sound..

So I've done alot more testing on the speakers and in the location that they are, the tweeters are pretty much facing my ears. I don't feel like I am in that 'null' area, and the dipole effect wasn't heard as it should have been. So I decided to move my couch backwards into the null area before I moved the speakers forward. In that area I could notice less localization, but thats obvious due to the fact I didn't have any speakers facing me.

Here are two pictures(sorry for the cell-phone quality) of how it looked before I moved the couch back:

After testing with the couch in the null area, I didn't personally like the sound that way. I like the localization much better. However, I don't think I would rather go with monopole, as I did feel like there was more ambiance created this way. Also, very obviously, not everyone is going to be seated in the null zone, and I would definitely like to stretch out the sound on the sides, and I think these types of speakers would help me do it. There is more of a 'theater-like' sound with the sides not DIRECTLY facing the center of the room.

I'm thinking about keeping the speakers where they are, and keeping my couch where it originally was. If I do, would it be a better idea to use BIPOLE to stretch the sound out evenly in each direction? If that would produce the widest SIDE-surround field, I think that will be what I'll go with.

The only other concern I have is that since my side surround will be BEHIND the main seating area-- I may confuse that with the REARS.
