The itch won.......

That's right; for over a year I've had this stupid idea of trying vinyl......as if I didn't know that nothing can beat a good digital rig :p

Why now? Who knows; maybe I missed the whole upgrade process.....searching, analyzing reviews, shopping, waiting for the UPS guy, etc. It's been a few months since I have not changed anything in my system. Maybe it's all those threads where people talk about vinyl, the records cleaning pain, digital vs. vinyl....

Whatever; I just decided that the only way to calm the itch was to go ahead and try it. I did some research, and decided to go with the following:

TT: Pro-ject RM-5
Cartridge: Dynavector 10x5
Phono stage: Pro-ject Tube Box II
I also got a VPI cleaning machine, alignment tool carbon fiber brush, etc, etc, etc.

I thought I'd go with something a bit above the lowest entry level; I just hope that if I like it I don't need to upgrade too soon..

Stuff should be here at the end of the week; I have a few records and got some more (cheap!!!); we'll see how this adventure goes.....

Ever since our IL Polkfest I have thought about taking the vinyl plunge again. Not because I think they sound better, but because that Nottingham turntable that Rich brought was just about the neatest thing I have seem. I don't want to have to use it, I just want it setting there to look at :o

Congrats HT. Great choices...my next cartridge will be that Dynavector.

I have a much more modest vinyl rig; but even so, with the right record, it still kills my digital setup.

Congrats. Honestly, I love sitting down listening to vinyl. Mp3 and Cd's have nothing on it. Just remember some LP were bad to start with so try different albums and ask some of the vinyl guys what LP's they like.

    Enjoy

What kind of improvements? (On top of an easier way to change speeds).

    Thanks.

I just removed you from the list of respectable audiophiles.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

You're in luck! He's selling it (bought something else - another Nottingham IIRC).

congrats Ricardo. I think you'll like it all over again.

myself only having jumped on the vinyl bandwagon since the beginning of this year.. I have enjoyed toying with the TT and the albums. Some time done the upgrade path for me, i'd like to have a rig like the one you are putting together.

My only advice, spend the extra money on sealed albums. Nearly ever open album will be a let down.

enjoy, and let us know how you like it once you get everything set up.. I imagine you'll really love it. :)

Pretty much across the board improvement for the Xpression, most notably in rhythm and bass response. It really was a dramatic improvement; not sure if you'll have the same results because your TT is better to start with.

Don't be afraid of the vinyl. Some day, digital will be better. Some people just don't have the patience to wait for that day.

    Ricardo...
after hearing your rig, I've no doubt that the addition of vinyl will imbue it with the ability to eat small planets.

    Congrats.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore
