Help needed

I just recently bought a toshiba hd dvd player model hd-a1. I thought that I finally had all the configuring done. For movies I use 5.1 analogs and for music cd's I use fiber optic and set receiver to 5 channel. Now when I watch a movie I get little to no bass hardly even noticable, I've gone to set up menu and done the speaker setting on the dvd player and still nothing. I was told that I can't adjust anything on my receiver because all processing is done with the dvd player. If someone could please give me some ideas as to what I can do I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Try setting the speaker settings in the player to LARGE. You have your speaker settings in the AVR to small?

try setting all speakers to small.. and see what happens.. if you still get nearly no bass.. then it's some other settings.

you using the 5.1 analog inputs on your receiver.. and then listening to movies in direct 5.1 mode? that should be the right way to hook up the Toshiba player.

That's the first generation model. Website no longer lists it, and there is actually a 3rd gen on the way. Speculated to see them this fall.

ahhh ok.. but i couldn't even find a users manual for that model on their site. unless i didn't look hard enough.

I did try them on large and it didnt help. Instead of use sub out on my receiver should I run the sub off of my fronts through speaker wire?

No. Did you fully update the player to the current FW 2.3?

try setting them to small. not large.. large sends bass to your fronts.. and you don't want that. you want the bass to go to your subwoofer.. set them to small. with an 80Khz crossover.

did you use the auto calibration in your receiver to set the levels? If not. try that. or get a sound level meter and do it manually.. i think the problem is your subwoofer volume is to low.. either on the rear of the Velo or in your receiver settings.

firmware I did it earlier today. I normally have my speakers set to small and I tried it at 80 Khz.

I have volume at 2/3 in a 10'x15' room. I did the autocalibration when I got the avr. But with 5.1 analogs the hk doesn't proccess the sound I had to set that also inside the dvd player. It's wierd tho cause when setting speakers levels u cant go up only down.

maybe I'm just dense but I'm still not understanding or doing what that forum said cause I'm still not getting any bass...

Check your H/K for a +10dB boost option for the multichannel analogue SW.

Carefully read the second link that I posted. Hope this helps.

Went into my avr osd and set sw setting to +10. Then on the player itself I went to speaker config and set all the other speakers to -5 and left sw at 0. Kinda funny really I did that last night and ran the test tone on the player itself and still couldn't hear any bass. I tried it again this morning and just left it and threw in the bourne supremacy and it sounded great. Thanks again for the links and the help.

I dont mean to drag this thread on , but this quote doesnt sound right, danger.

In a 5.1 system. The .1 LFE is a deticated channnel for bass. Wether or not the fronts are set to large are small, if sub (LFE) is "on" on the avr, the bass will be sent to the sub and the fronts. So if you dont have bass and your playing a DD or DTS disk then that means your sub is either too low or off, it doesnt matter wether speakers (any or all) are set to large or small.

Some receivers will not send LFE to the sub with the speakers set to LARGE in the AVR. Some receivers have a "plus" setting that will work around the LARGE speaker setting.

Every receiver I have owned, when I switched to front, large, I had to manually go in the menu and turn the sub off. Other wise, it default to LFE + L/R

But thats what I'm saying. If you get no bass from sub :

1. Its turned off. Either in player or AVR.

2. Volume (gain) too low.

3. Its not plugged in the right jack.

But the fact that the speakers are set to large doesnt necssarily mean the sub is not on.

I just didnt want to confuse him into thinking just cause his speakers were set to large, ment that he would not get any bass from sub. He doesnt have to keep speakers on small.
