I need a good gaming CPU

I am building a new gaming computer and have not decided on which CPU to use. I started looking at Intel's E6850 because of its 3GHz. Then I saw AMDs 6000+ which has the same 3GHz, but is half the price. However, upon reading more reviews, the 6000+ has lower benchmarks than the E6700. Now my head is spinning with the clock speeds, and benchmark tests, etc. Can you help me choose a CPU. Either of these CPUs sound good, but I am not dead set on either. Please help me!

PS. For reference I will be using an SLI mobo and a pair of 8800GTS

Core 2 for absolute sure. Only reason to think about AMD right now is that fact that they are dead cheap. Get the Core 2 Duo. My main machine is still an AMD X2 4400 (bought when it first came out) and my gammer before that was the AMD 3500+ when it was new. If I were to buy a box right now, no doubt, Core 2 duo or quad. Make sure you get the new 1333 MHZ front side bus and DDR3 models.

I’m buying 2 $20000 servers at work right now, cant wait to get my hands on them. dual processor Xeon Quad cores running at 3.0 ghz and 1333 FSB. Imagine that horse power. The SQL server will have 24 gigs of ram. Exchange server will probably have 16.

These multi processor chips are great. Used to be you had to buy an expensive server board to get more than one chip. Now you can plug more than one processor in the same slot. Now if they could only get the OS to take full advantage of them without having to go 64-bit...or get a decent 64-bit OS...

Silverti's right, though. Go with the benchmark unless you're on a budget. AMD will always give you an advantage in price. They used to have the best gaming chips, but intel really came back strong with their latest offerings...

Intel is the chip to get right now. The best way to compare processors is to go to the Tom's Hardware website and search for the 2007 CPU charts. They compare all the current chips under a variety of tests and apps and graph the results.

Man, you guys are good. I think I will have to go with Intel's Core 2 set. Thanks for all the suggestions, and the CPU comparison page.

Do ya'll think there would be much difference between the E6850 (3.0Ghz) and the E6700 (2.66Ghz) when playing games?

The Quads are supposed to overclock like crazy. Just something to think about.

don't worry about clock speeds. that's probably the least important thing to focus on when choosing. as long as the rest of your computer is good, then you shouldn't notice. think about just how much math a 2.66g processor can do in one second.

AMD had the gaming market cornered for a while, but Intel has now up and whooped their collective behinds . I worked for Intel for 2 years ...3 years ago...we were developing the stuff you are seeing now...back then...that was cool.

The actual job at Intel sucked though....being in final test at Intel you were the technician/engineer/and the stinking operator of all the toolsets that ran the product...engineering part cool...tech part was my bread and butter...being an operator and having to actually keep track of the batches of product and run them in the tools sucked badly. And you dont even get a discount on the cpu's

So buy the best Intel cpu you can afford...

I just ordered a Q6600..those things have really dropped in price..

that along with the 8800 GTS card..

pc gaming is fun again for me without dropping $2k:D

I've heard from numerous places on the net that the E6750 is the best bang for the buck.I built an AMD 64 4000+ machine at the beginning of the year, and wish I would have stuck with the Intel. This is the first time I have built an AMD machine for my self, and wish I would have stayed with Intel. My 3 year old P4 2.4 machine is just a little slower than my new amd rig, but the Intel mulitasks a lot better, and faster.

get a Core 2 duo for about 300$ at newegg, the clockspeed war is not as significant as it once was, the GPU you have will be just as important for gaming.

I ended up getting the E6850 (3.0gig) because of a price break at my local shop. The 1333Mhz FSB was also hard to pass up. I paired that with 4 gigs of 800Mhz RAM and my new computer is zipping along quiet well. Thanks for all the suggestions. Once again, no body treats me better than CP.
