was just wondering is there a cheap/easy way of making a volume control? i have an old receiver that i have plugged into an equalizer with a spectrum display.. well the problem is the output level is so high it peaks the damn thing and i don't get to see the pretty lights :@ the volume control doesn't control the output and i'd just like to cut it down just a bit.. any way of doing this?

maybe you could drop all of the eq bands by a few dB?gear list:
1 down, 4 up.... -
Attenuators should work, for example Rothwell Attenuators. If you want volume control you could go for a basic passive pre, should be less then $100.
If you are handy you could DIY, I think the Rothwells just have a resistor inside. -
A couple 100ohm (mono) audio taper pots across the outputs will do the job. Make sure you get audio taper, not linear. You can get some at your local parts haus for a couple bucks. If it cuts it too much, you could use 50ohm, but 100ohm is usually the perfect starting point for a basic passive volume control.

the taper pots just splice into the audio cord right?

Just wire up a potentiometer, shouldn't cost you more than $10 for everything you need. The wiper is the output, wire the pos. input to B and ground to A. A 50K pot would probably be a good choice.
