I have a Denon 2307ci RTi12's for the fronts CSi5 for center and FXi5's for surround. I watch all my BD's at about -10db. Sounds good to me but is there a way i could be damaging my speaks since i know for sure i'm not sending enough power to them....aka RTi12's? I have noticed at any listening volume sometimes my CSi5 tweeter gets a little raspy during dialog. This doesnt happen in every movie just in more movies where the actor is yelling. Could this be a reciever problem also. Also 12awg is running to all speakers.

The raspy sound could be your receiver clipping. Be very careful with that since you can fry the tweeters really easily in that case...

For what it's worth, -10db doesn't really mean much to anyone who doesn't own that receiver. They're all pretty different, but I'm assuming it tops out somewhere around 0 or +20?

Sounds like you play it pretty loud.Have you set you speaker levels??Did you do any kind of set up in the receiver or dvd player??That raspy sound you hear is most likely due to pushing the limits of your center.Could be you blew something in the center from cranking it up.

thats a very loud volume, is your system calibrated to reference level. If not you need to calibrate and I would highly suggest 3 monoblock amps or a 2 chan. amp + 1 monoblock or a good 3 chan amp for your rig before as mentioned you fry something. Audiogon is your friend, use it.

well I have another polk center that i just hooked up and i am still getting the same noise. -10db really isn't that loud in my setup because of my room size.
    Could this be my reciever?

Oh where to begin.......Lets start with that volume dial.If at that volume level in a big room, doesn't sound that loud, then guess what, you have the wrong gear. Most likely you could benefit from adding an amp or upgradeing your speakers.Lets put that aside for a minute, did you check all your connections? Make sure no wires from the binding posts on the center are touching each other?? Is the center set to large or small?? Setting it to small will take some of the load off of it.Have you tried different speaker cable?? Maybe the ones you have running to the center aren't shielded or are damaged somehow and is picking up interference from something else.Try the center on a different channel from the avr and see if the problem is still there.

I have a Denon 3803, and -10db is LOUD with my RTi8's and CSi5. My normal listening level for movies is around -15db; this is still loud, but not annoying. I do go as high as -5db sometimes for demos and such, but for short periods. I've never heard any strange noise from the tweeters though. As others have said, check all your connections.

I checked all my connections, I even put my RTi12 as my center and that tweeter was doing the same thing. Over the weekend I brought home a yamaha 661 from are showroom and the new reciever did not change anything. I'm dealing with it, I have narrowed down to tweeters matched with certain heavy dialog movies. If anyone has Fear and loathing on hd-dvd see if your system does this.

The 12's and 5 have the same tweeter. My guess is that you're simply pushing it too hard.

like I said this noise I do not hear all the time just in heavy dialog movies. I don't want to give the impression that it is a annoying loud raspy noise. it's so subtle that my wife and friends can't even hear it but my picky ears can. But I am ordering 3 crown amps tomorrow to give my front stage the power it deserves. I will chime back in after those are installed.

Possible the sound is coming from your center channel clipping? (if not in the amplifier, perhaps in the pre-amp stage)

    Just a thought,
