Can you test an amp without a tuner?

I believe I read that you could hook a cd player directly up to a power amp to test it. I know I'll have to turn the gain to 0 and slowly increase it till I hear sound.
The reason I ask it, I may have found a deal on a nice amp, but he already sold his pre-amp and I don't feel like dismantling my system.
TIA,

I usually test amps with my iPod, because it has volume control on it.

Plug adapter into iPod, plug adapter into amp, turn iPod on, make sure volume is all the way down, turn on amp, pick a song, play song, slowly turn volume up.

Anyway, that's how I do it. If you hook up a CDP without gain/volume control, make sure your amp has gain/volume control. If neither has gain control, I'd find another solution.

I had my old Sony ES (CA80ES) hooked up directly to my amp for a while, but even at it's lowest volume setting (on the CDP), it was already at a moderate volume level.

Good luck. If it blows up, I hope you do not hold me personally liable :)

either your CDP has to have variable audio outputs or your amp has to have gain controls to be able to do this correctly.. either way. turn the amp volume all the way down. and use crappy speakers just in case.

I'm now the proud owner of a immaculate Mcintosh MC-7270.

Now time to build a 2 ch. rig around it. :D
