I can ether send my Cherry LSi 9's back to Polk to be fixed "at what price?" I have know Idea plus shipping or I can go back to the place that I bought my ebony ones last Friday for $500 and pick up there last pair for the same price and fix my Cherry 9's myself? So what do you guys think.. I realize that Ken is a very busy person and I have not heard back from him yet. Now If it would be cheaper for me to fix them my self then thats what I'll do.. But then again I have no Idea what Polk gets for there replacement parts because I haven't heard back from Ken.. But I'm tryn to figure this out ASAP before they sell that last pair.

Thanks for any help you guys can give me...

Would you be comfortable swapping drivers & Xovers between the good speakers and the bad ones? (I have friends who should never try such a thing, as they might put a screwdriver through a driver cone. For them I suggest asking for help.) But if you know your way around a screwdriver, then you should be able to locate the problem parts yourself. Then order parts (any chance they are still under warranty?) and install them yourself. Save $$ on shipping and labor.:) If ordering parts, be sure to tell Polk that you are a forum member--I believe that gets you a discount or free shipping.:D

    Cheers, Jim

Also remember shipping to and from Polk for repair will add to the cost. Do you need 3 pairs of LSi 9's? I'm sure you could get them repaired including shipping for less than $500. So it's up to you. .

Unless you can trouble shoot the x-over it's probably best to either send it in for repair or see if can purchase a "new" x-over from Polk which you can swap yourself. For you to swap all the parts in the x-over would not be cost effective.

You should also determine what caused this issue so it doesn't happen again. Did you overdive the Cinema Grand or pehaps there is anissue with 1 channel in your amp, etc.

Definetly trouble shoot first by swapping the tweets. I never mention that because for me it's just 2nd nature to start the process of elimination.

I have not read through yet, just the original question, so sorry if this is mentioned already...if you buy new pair deal that sounds like a steal, you would have a warranty/no shipping charges/no shipping anxiety/no wait/a lot of spare parts.
    Sound good?

Aren't they still under warranty? I have a ten year warranty on mine. Working on them yourself would void any warranty. Send back the cherries and get the second set of blacks at that outstanding price. Just can't have too many LSi9's.

Sell the 9s after you fix them, then add a pair of LSi15s floorstanders. Seen your other posts and see the SVS sub has arrived, congrats.

9's last week. So I had thought about taking my 7's up stairs and building a 2 channel rig with a tube amp and a new pre/pro. then I would have a pair of cherry 9's up front and a pair of Ebony 9's in the rear. Also thanks for the kind words on me finally getting my SVS pb12-plus/2 <--- this thing rocks.. I'm kinda wanting to secretly adding some Bass shakers to the Luv seat and couch with out my wife knowing... LoL!

Wouldn't the 15's be over kill with the sub? <---- guys that just a question..
also what would be a Good but inexpensive tube amp that would run the 7's nicely and a good pre/pro that would not break the bank? <--- I'm up for suggestions.
    Thanks!

I like the mids on the 15's better plus the fuller sound but I'm running off an AVR so what do I know? :D

Plus, I love the look of the 15's vs 9's on a stand.

However, if you're mostly into movies I guess it would be overkill. For 2 channel music, I love my 15's.

Not to poke fun at the extended warranty people in this thread...

But --- I can not imagine using the warranty for a speaker...

Besides, after 5 years - it will be an old model and you can buy them used for like 1/3 what you paid and get all new parts and enclosures...

Makes me laugh inside. Rock on with your extended warranties! :)

As for this - buy the other pair of 9's...get you some spare parts... make a center or something.

Not everyone on the forum is a "BALLA" like you guy. Some guys have to stretch it to make it work. I dont put warranties on speakers either, but again some people like to put extended warranties on everything. Sort of like a safe zone I guess.

The extended warranty only cost me $30. As this was my first set of Polks and I plunked down $800 for 'em, I figured the extra $30 to double the warranty wasn't bad. As I have had a habit of toasting speakers in the past and not knowing the durability of the Polks, I went for it. As a rule, I don't do the extended warranty thing.

Do they honor extended warranties on speakers? Seems like abuse clauses would leave so much wiggle room for the issuing company. If they worked for years and a magnet didn't fall off a basket.
If a voice coil jumped the gap,over-drove and got bradded out, burned, chaffed or charred from arcing.
Speakers(non-powered) seems like a light bulb in that...if they work for some fair amount of time,it would be hard to convince some third party to pay the bill. I'm probably wrong and it's just a numbers game in which the issuer wants to give excellent service to grow thier business. Unlike most other insurance.

Well I opened up the speaker today and guess what I found.. I think there was a quality control problem with the X-over when it was installed. So now my warranty is out and I'm probably going to have to buy a new one but I'm thinking about try'n to re-solder the filter "or what ever this white thing is?" back to the board.. tell me what you guys think I should do.

appears they ran hard and hot and the solder became fluid...try a resolder with some higher temp leadfree.
put a heatsink clip or forceps on the lead by the resistor body.

Is that a resistor or some sacrifical protection? My eyes can't focus on the numbers. You could quickly test if that part is still good by hooking up the speaker and pushing it back in by thumb.

resistor still good. but it did appear that it could have gotten hot at one time. But I'm not an electronic engineer. but at soon at I touched the board "Waa Laa" Tweet was singing like a little bird again.. "I'm still thinking about buying a few spare parts for them just in case." :)

The factory solder used at that high temp point was maybe too low temp. Lead free has a higher working temp (makes f-ugly joints but withstands higher operating temps).
You could just push 'em in and hit it with a pencil iron and add a bit of solder just clip a heat sink clip to the axial lead between the board and resistor.

Inspect the other joints with a good light and magnifying glass while in there.

All the Home Depot's around here stock the fine little, just right for small electronic projects,Weller SP-23 Pencil-iron kit (my under $20 hero) and small (vial) spools of lead free-solder.

Small clip on 'Heat sinks' can be sourced at Radio Shk.
The discoloration in the photo looks like glue instead of heat but you have the real world view.
You could have 'em running today. Just document the numbers and pics for an order to Polk, who may hook you up with the parts for very little if they understand you own 2 pair of these.
IMO just resolder and worry about the parts later.
