Arenac county Michigan. It's a bank foreclosed house. I know it's gonna sell with in the next year, someone is going to get smart, buy it cheap, fix it up, and sell it after the casino goes in a half hour down the road. Oh yeah it also sits on 2 acres(would be great for the kids:))

If I did put money in Mexico, I would go with Cabo. That place is awesome!

Cabo San Luca is great (right next to PV across the ocean) but there's not much infrastructure yet. Cheaper than PV but for a reason. Puerto Penasco I don't know about but we're set on Puerto Vallarta because it's a big resort and the flow of tourists and longer staying retirees is good, the rental market makes it a low risk. Plus it's my wife's hometown so it's the only option for us besides Cabo.

Andy, MX is a great place to invest right now. Rated by many as better place to invest than China or Brazil. I would stay away from US stocks in general right now. One of the stocks I've been buying and selling is AMX (America Movil), I started at $42 a piece back in November, it's now in the low 60's (~61). Another good one is Cemex (CX) that supplies cement, tells you about the boom in development...

If I was to invest in US, I would look at RIMM but the $166 price is scary. I don't understand why they haven't split it a long time ago.

I was going to say a house, but I think once all my debt was paid off I could afford a much nicer house much sooner, with less to worry about once I got "house poor." So I have to go with paying off debt.

Since I'm currently in the market for a car, I imagine I would use it to buy the car instead of financing. If I were not in the market for a car I'd look into a pool.

Pay my truck and student loans off. Buy that piece of gear that you'll never need to buy again, say an amp or turntable and invest whatever was left, say 10k or so.

I would super glue $100 bills to completely cover my naked body, head to toe, except for my eyes, then go to the mall and hangout.

Car loans are cheap money, you're better off financing the car and investing the $30k. :D

If you're looking for a sedan, my roommate just got an M3 and he's looking to get rid of his G35 ('04) below market price. Just FYI since you're in Texas.

I would buy a house so I could stop paying rent. We found a house last fall that we really love, but I could not get financing. 30K would be a nice down payment(3/4 of the price of the house). The house is still on the market. It was built in the early 1900's, it's 2800 sq.ft. hardwood floors through out most of the house. There is some cracking in the plaster due to the house settling, one of the bathroom floors needs to be replaced, the roof needs to be re-shingled. Other than that the place isn't in bad shape. I'd want to do a little updating, new cupboards in the kitchen, switch the boiler over from electric to either corn, or wood pellets, and a few other little things(HT room, 2ch room, toy room for the boys.) Oh well I can dream right.

Damn, A house like that in my area is $700K easy. I heard that houses were selling for less than cars in Michigan due to the big 3 and other industries in difficulty, it's sad really.

$30K doesn't go as far as it used to. I'd definitely pay off debt, but I'd like to give some to charity too. Realisticly though, a chunk would need to go towards education costs for my kid(s).

    Dude,

My dad and all his family are from Arenac County, MI. . . Standish, to be specific. My 90 year old grandma is a little worried about the Casinos going in 4 miles from her house.

Anyway, it's a great town. I can name all the big hot spots. Used to have Worley's, A&W, Big Wheel, bowling alley, etc. I think there are only 1200 people in Standish, and my family knows most of them. . . hell, my family is about 20 of them :)

    Small world.

Well big wheel has been gone for a long time. I worked in Standish for the past 2 year up until this past January. A&w is still there, not sure about Worley's. The bowling alley burnt down, and has been rebuilt. I don't recognize the family name. I live about 20 min. north of Standish on 23 in Au Gres. I'd say the population is more than that, Au Gres is smaller than Standish and has that many winter residents, the population here is estimated to swell to 6-12,000 in the summer. I think the best thing about living up here is a 5 minute drive in any direction and you are either in the middle of nowhere, or on the bay.

Yeah, it is a small world. I moved up here 17 years ago, from the Detroit area when my mom passed away. It's funny how many people from that area are up here, not to mention just from my home town of Hazel Park.

30,000 just isnt that much money...

I'd probally put it in the bank. Unless I was rich and gaining 30 grand was just a perk... and then I'd probally still save it. haha

Didn't you just graduate high school??

Jesus, it took me till I was well out of college before I would even consider saying 30k isn't that much money.... and even now, when I make a good salary... 30k is a lot of money.

    Don't be so cynical.

It's not what it used to be for sure but it's still a good chunk of change. I wouldn't mind having it. I voted down payment on another house.

$30K is about the yearly expenses of the average 4 person household around here. To say it's not a lot of money is a little goofy, especially for an 18 yo. ;)

If your grandma ever needs help with any thing let me know. I'm usually down in Standish once or twice a week as I have a few friends that live down there.

Worley's was a bar my dad used to frequent on the main street there (gone now), was just across from what is now Norman's (I think that's the name of the discount athletic shop). My dad's family used to run a general store right there next to it, and also had a shop that fixed John Deere tractors and such.

Preciate the offer on helping Grandma out, especially with her now being 90. . . but I don't know how I would explain "nice gentleman I met on my internet audio forum whom I've never met is going to take you to the grocery store" from 1200 miles away, when I don't think she has even broken into email / online anything yet. But, I know you were being sincere and appreciate the offer. She has 2 sons, 2 daughter in laws, and about 10 grand kids that live right there. She's alone, but not too lonely.

Back to your regularly scheduled program. . . I might buy some land in Standish with 30K after all this reminiscing.

I keep getting told by financial advisors that paying off debt is one of the worst things you can do with a big windfall. But most of those guys are rolling in cash don't know how oppressive debt in an amount large enough to suck up 30K or more can be.

The answer of paying off debt doesn't sound like fun but, if you are gainfully employed and no longer have a large debt load that you have to work for every week, you all of a sudden gain this liberating financial freedom. You can actually take a vacation without having to worry about cost. You don't have to log that overtime anymore because the car needs a set of tires or something equally as trivial but important. Paying off debt is boring and no fun at the outset but the dividends in personal time will be way more valuable. Alot of the financial advisors I talk to don't get that or at least don't see the value in it.

I'd pay off debt. Being debt free...I can't think of very much that would be better than that. The few things are stuff like becoming a parent, seeing your kid graduate college or get married or get married yourself and other stuff like that.
