Let me start off and say I think the people on this Forum are the best anywhere and someone knows something of everything, making this the icing on the cake.

Thanks

Ok, some of you already know I started a business which right now makes $0 but on a positive side TAXES are just about $0 also. So lets say it's cash poor. Being so I look for the less expensive way to get it done. I would like a Forum  on my website to state why something changed or hints on how to use, or just members helping members thing. I believe this would help, but being poor look for the least expensive way of getting it done.

So I'm trying Mongoose Solutions Forum which I got upload but can't get it to work. The database script is wrong I think. server=www.dvrblackbox.com;database=forum;user id=ID;password=PASSWORD;provider=sqloledb when I try this is I get this error [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

Then below that Connection Failed. Please check the connection string.

Anyone how could make me laugh or shed some light feel free.

What database server are you using? The error message suggests MS SQL Server. Not something on the less expensive side in terms of licencing fees... ;) Of course it could be a reading comprehension problem on my part...

Yes it's a new Forum, and yes it's MS SQL which seems to be the only one the program will let me do? As ORACLE and MySQL are greyed out. The program as a 100 post limit to trial and a price of $120 is that a bit and switch price?

It sounds like you've already got your program identified, but if you're open to other options I'd recommend phpBB. It's easy to install, easy to use, and it's free.

If you end up with that one and need some help, let me know.

So, you have a copy of MS SQL server installed? And you've installed the OLEDB drivers?

I doubt that the trial version or even the full version for $120 would include a licence for MS SQL. Alas, I'm far removed from the database end these days so you never know... The upper ups have concluded I'm less likely to test production disaster recovery scenarios in my present position.

I imagine if anyone could, they would.

I usually use a site geared more for this type of problem, for example, www.dslreports.com

They have an extensive user base and many specific forums for help.

phpbb and EZBoard are the way to go. PhpBB is a lil better though :)

As far as getting it in your directory or w/e - I can't help you there.

I like this board so I post here first, but if we can't figure out I ask else where. I just hate being a post and go member, and the info you can get here because it feels like family is unreal in my eyes. Thanks all.

Well this is what I've done I removed the Forum.net stuff, uploaded the phpBB stuff. Didn't really understand the database thing, so plug forward which errors out put directories everywhere crashing the site last night. Well until I deleted all that extra stuff. I still having problems getting phpBB to setup where it states can't access database. And what odd it ask me for an user name but there no user name just a password?

I'm going to try a few things this morning rename MySQL database and or upload another type.

    Engtaz,

I'm lost at the moment or just F'ng confused on what to do next. Like if I'm running this on a web server do I need to run Linux not win or ? Do I need to start DB remotely before I could get the phpbb to setup? And now a new problem I uploaded a 8 version of PostgreSQL where phpbb will only talk to version 7. F*CK me. But at least it was trying with PostgreSQL it doesn't do **** with the MySQL

BTW you just like hearing about my saga or you're a C-Bander who whats a DVRBB?

    Hey Joe,

Does your web host provide you with database access? I'm assuming you're using a hosting company for your website and not hosting the site yourself.

If they do give you database access I'm guessing that you need to use their control panel to create a database on your account before running through the phpBB installer.

I have never installed phpBB before, but taking a quick look at their installation instructions it sounds like the installer will configure everything for you, but I don't think it can create the database for you. The database must already be there so that the installation script can create the tables and set everything up.

Have a look in the control panel for your web host and see if there is anything about creating a MySQL or PostgreSQL database.

    Brad,

Well I didn't know that a website hosting could do that? My website is hosting by yahoo and I checked and it has it, but it too busy to get me going right now :( Stay tune.

Thanks more of the puzzle pieces are coming together. :)

Once you create the database you will need to make sure that you have at least one user in your database with enough security to create tables (probably an admin user). That will be the database username and password that you provide to the phpBB install program. The phpBB script should then use that user's login to go and create all of the tables you will need for the forum.... I think. Like I said, I've never installed phpBB before, but it will most likely work this way.

Let me know if you need any help with this. I'm a programmer and provide support for clients all the time. I've got a remote desktop type of tool that I could use to log into your computer remotely and watch what you're doing and give you some pointers to hopefully get you up and running sooner. Using the remote tool will just give me access to see what you're doing as long as you want me to, and then you wouldn't have to give me any of your website passwords or anything for me to help you out.

Thanks all for the help so far. Special thanks goto Polkmaniac for suggestion phpbb, Brad for saying look idiot you have a database already on you host why not use that. Well he stated it much better and no I didn't take it that way, but I once I get it started it felt that way. ;)
