Dedicated DVD player

I have always been suspicious of players that attempt to play every format. I also don't like to pay for the ability to play formats I don't intend to use. Are there new/used dedicated DVD players that play just dvd (and maybe cd) that go for less than $1000 and that would make a big improvement over my Panasonic S77 (HDMI and upconverts)?

No. Most anything above the budget range is going to be "universal" these days. You'd probably have to go to a Denon 3910 or higher to best your S77---even that would be arguable.

I think the OPPO 970 at $150 is a killer machine from every review I have seen. The Cambridge Audio DVD players and the Denon 19xx series players are also very good.

Being universal in many cases does not take away their ability for good dvd playback, and with costs ever decreasing, the extra format playability is usually just gravy.

seconded Oppo 970. A respectable contender to several higher priced players that I have.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I don't think the Oppo 970 is going to be any better than the Panny S77. That S77 is a great little dvd player. You won't get much better unless you move up to the expensive Denons, which of course are universal players. Stick with what you got.

I would keep the Panny until the Blue Ray /HD DVD wars settle down and prices fall further on those players.
