Whats the best way to burn in a new amp? I recieved the proton D-1200 amp today and it is basically new with only 2 hours total use on it, It still smells like a new amp with the plastic /rubber heating up in it.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

Charcoal and some mesquite wood chips on a slow burn.

Seriously, just play it often and leave it on for awhile (meaning don't turn it on for a 1/2 hour and off for 2 hours then back on again, etc.) Really not sure there is a proper way to burn electronics in. Me personally, I tend to leave things on rather than turning them off and on. If I'm home for most of the weekend the system goes on and stays powered up all weekend.

That is a sweet amp. I remember several years ago flipping thru a Crutchfield catalog I wanted to get some Proton stuff. Essentially an offshoot of NAD sometime before AMC Welltronics. I never did get to listen to any Proton stuff back when they were popular. I occasionally check e-bay for an unit at a rock bottom price, but those are usually abused. Certainly something I don't need but would like to give a listen to someday.

I leave mine on 27 x 7. I had to turn just the amps off for a little while last week cause I was Dynamating the spokes in my mid-woofers and passive radiator baskets.

The only other time I will turn them off is if a thunderstorm is brewing.

Nice. Someone told me back in January that I should put a CD on repeat mode and leave the volume down low and just let it continue until I was ready to listen. Then after listening, put the CD back on loop and let it continue on low.

I couldn't do it cause I got so impatient to hear my rig, and remember, I hadn't heard a good rig in my own home for 17 years prior to, that after about 45 minutes I just started to listen and the first week I had my rig going I was in that room day and night, night and day. My wife then got on a kick and was listening to the rig 4 hours a day. . . so the break in time was shortened!!!!

What is the dynamating, some sort of damping material? oops I just noticed that the reflection caught part of my shoulder. I was stark **** naked while i was taking that pic, could have been far worse though.:D  :D

Dynamat is this asphalt based material that is used for dampening automobiles from the woes of the dreaded trunk subwoofer LOL. It comes is sheets and can be cut to practically any size you would need. It is a PITA when using it in the application I employed it. I had to cut 64, 1 1/4" x 2 1/2" pieces for the 16 mid-woofers and then 16, 1 1/4" X 5" pieces for the passive radiator.

It similar to sorbothane sheets with one difference. Dynamat is pretty much like formed tar. Once it's applied it is a **** to get off. Plus is gets under you fingernails and well you can imagine. The day after I did the job I walked out of the shower and was drying myself and found some in my hair and what I thought was a scab on my ear was a stuck piece of Dynamat LOL!!

BTW I'm very glad I did the job no matter how tedious, hand cramping or backing breaking. . . I got an audible improvement in my mid-range.

Yes lol. I was looking at it this morning telling myself what a mess.:p I figure that at some point I am going to cut the speaker wires to the proper length and take some wire ties and bundle some of the assorted connections together. And put a backer behind the stand to hide most of the rats nest :D

CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Actually Bro now that I reread your first post, since this is so old and has been fired up before, and run for only a few hours, you should wake it up slowly. When I first took my Spectral out of storage, (20 years of storage) I called Spectral and asked the engineer there if there was anything in particular that I should do before firing the preamp up. He told me to pop the top and make sure no dust or mosture had accumulated and then advised me to get a variac and slowly wake it up.

I believe I started a thread on it back in like August actually here it is . The thread has instructions on making a poor man's variac but I had lucked out in that LibertyC (Billy) had a variac that he lent me. I woke the preamp up slowly over two days.

If you haven't pluged it in yet for a long period of time you may want to consider doing this. One of the main reasons the engineer at Spectral said to do this was to slowly reform the caps and slowly get the circuitry stabilized by adding varying degrees of voltage to it over periods of time.

Sorry I didn't think of this earlier.
