Probably no such thing  . It's like asking what the greatest sports car of all time is :p . Good question and we'll get lots of varied answers. The best I've heard so far, IMO are the Revel Salon. Powered by Levinson No. 436 Mono blocks.

Here's a link to my impression when I heard them

As was stated it all depends on personal preference, so there is no such thing as "best". If you mean best that we have heard, I would say Gallo Reference 3.1s.

We don't have many high end stores around here and those that we do have I don't like (very condescending) so I don't think I have heard enough speakers to really give a valid opinion. When I got the Gallos I didn't feel a need to upgrade anything, and still do not a year and a half later.

So far from what I've experienced, Wilson Watt/PUPPY 7s. Flattest speaker from floor to ceiling that I've ever heard. I wish they weren't also the most expensive speakers I've heard, as I don't feel that price/performance always directly coorelate. But in this instance, I'm afraid that's the case.

When it is all said and done, that honor may go, with some objectivity, to the comparatively modest, and even fairly modestly priced, Quad ESL-57.

The JBL Paragon, Electrovoice Patrician, Altec A-5, and the venerable Klipschorn would also probably be in the running.

If you labeled at certain price and monitor and floorstanding points this would become a fascinating thread. For instance, under $5K my choice in monitors is the Sonus Faber Cremona Auditors.

The best I ever listened to was a set of Martin Logan Monolith's but they had over $50,000 worth of equipment running them and I really have not listened to much else that was in that high priced relm.

    Best speaker ever?

    Easy, the KLH Seventeen.

Small enough to place in / on a bookshelf, large enough to use on the floor. Tried and proven two-way acoustic suspension design. Easy to drive, but can take a fair amount of power too when you want to crank it up a bit. Inverted cloth surrounds, no rot to deal with. Real wood finish, tasteful off white grilles.

A benchmark for female vocals, as smooth and involving as anything out there. Solid bass into the 30's, making them full range for all intents and purposes. Built in tweeter contour switch, for a top end that will please just about anyone.

That, and even today you can still pick them up for next to nothing - affordable! There hasn't been a better 'all around' speaker built since.

The KLH 17 gets my award for 'best speaker of all time'.

For their price I haven't heard better than my Carver ALS Platinums. Not very efficient though, you have to flat pump some juice through them to get them to sing. I really like ribbon drivers.

Best beginner's audiophile speaker should be the PSB Alpha B, seriously... It was through these speakers (actually for me it was the towers, but for the sake of bang for buck I am saying the Bs) that my taste for high end had truly begun. Not to say I did not have the thirst before, I just didn't know I could actually afford something good at the time.

I have gone through many speakers since, auditioned many, and I still have my alpha towers for 2 channel HT, and I recently bought a set of matching Bs for a desktop system.

My other vote for best speaker ever... would have to be one of the JBL studio monitors... like 4401 or something... JBL monitors were used to record 75% of the music you guys probably listen to... so I think that puts them up there. Right now I have a set of Pro IIIs with woofer upgrades for my desktop, I love the sweet sound of some of the older JBL tweeters.
