dts vs. dolby digital

Is there a difference between these 5.1 tracks on DVDs. Is one better than the other? I have read at least one person's posts on this forum that make it sound like DTS is better, and I was just wondering if this was true. I already know that they are different types of 5.1 encoding and that DTS is rarer than Dolby Digital. Thanks for clearing this up.

Ah Yes! The debate begins anew! Basically the only way to figure out which is best is to try them both. What may sound good to one person may sound like CRRAAAPPP to someone else. I prefer DTS to DD myself.

DTS uses less data compression than does DD. To most listeners, it sounds more open, airy, and natural. I'm in the DTS camp - I like it better. But both are very, very good.

The differences are subtle, but noticeable to the discriminating listener. There have been numerous double blind tests and generally about 80-90% of the time, the listener can tell the difference between the two.

I guess it depends on the disc & the system. I certainly noticed a difference in the regular (non-late night) DD & DTS soundtracks of Mulholland Drive, the latest David Lynch film. DTS was great, DD non-late night was good, but I had to change to DD late night mode due to location & time of night. And that was still ok, due to the quality of the soundtrack & the general weirdness of the movie. But DTS was what I would've used if I had no concerns about volume.

The DTS website has a complete listing of all DVD titles that have a DTS soundtrack.

I probably have at least 10 DTS titles in my collection. Latest acquisition is Blade II in DTS ES 6.1.

i like DTS over DD myself.. i can hear a difference.. at least on my system.. like someone said.. earlier. it depends on your system..
DTS sounding more open and airy.. with better seperation and a more fuller sound from the fronts and rears. Lord of the Rings does sound pretty damn good in DD i must admit. if i have the choice though. i usually choose dts over dd.

One way to tell which format sounds best on your system is to buy/borrow a DVD that has both DD and DTS soundtracks. One that comes to mind is "Terminator 2".
