GNX124 Question

This may seem like a stupid question but I'm new to this.
Ok, so I got 2 12" gnx124 of of a friend of mine. I got a kenwood 1000w amp and hooked everything up.
They're loud and all but once I close my trunk I can barely hear them. The bass isnt that great either. But the thing is is that I dont have a box for them yet. I know I need one and I should be getting one within a few days but my question is how much of a different is an enclosure for them actually going to make?
Either way, I'm getting a box. I was just wondering.

If you don't have a box how are you playing the subs now? Free air?-Eric

Most speakers, and definitely subwoofers are made to be housed in a box. Here's a little helpsie:
