I have yet to see any of it, no HD in the house. But at $70 for the HD-DVD/Blu-rays that is just way over priced.

Not really, with Amazon Prime and with discount it comes out to about $15.75 a disk. My total with 2-day shipping and the HD promotion, comes out to $62.95. Good deal to me, on pre-order...

$6 an hour for the episodes alone, not to mention the extras. Doesn't seem that far off to me. You'd easily pay $12 for a 90 minutes so-so movie, this is no brainer, no?

Its not all that overpriced. I think of it as a good gift for the HD nut in your life, and that price is about right.

I also don't see a high rewatch factor with this so that's another reason not to buy.

    BIZILL,

It really doesn't matter, which ever player you have or favor, get that format.

On this particular disk, they have the same content and use the same exact VC-1 Video encode. The HD DVD version has lossless Dolby TrueHD audio, while Blu-Ray has lossless PCM audio.

I have a PS3 and an XA1, I purchased the HD DVD version as it's my preferred format.

I have both format players as well. Like I mentioned before I will buy the HD DVD just because I try to support both. My last 3 titles were BR so, heres 1 for HD DVD.

from what i read elsewhere, it's not narrated by weaver. i believe the broadcast form was, but not the disc versions.

I think its the difference between the UK and US versions. The BR and HD-DVDs are the UK version.

ron p, i know you have both hd dvd and bluray. if you get planet earth, which format will you be going for?
I buy pretty much 100% Blu-ray now, but it does depend more-so on disc specs then anything else. I will say, Blu's PQ is just as impressive, even some better, as HD-DVD and most every disc has some sort of lossless audio (mostly LPCM) where HD-DVD gives us very few discs with TrueHD. My money goes where I can get the best A/V presentation and so far that's nearly all Blu. Their doing it right, more so then HD-DVD is anyway.

To add to that, I feel Blu will win this war, they've got the studio backing to do it, much more then HD-DVD, plus no combo-disc's (those are a joke) to worry about having to buy if I want my hi-def movie.

So, my choice would be which ever format offered the best A/V. That would be the one I'd buy. If the specs are the same, I go Blu.
    If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

Might be a bit premature... did you see the announcement today that Wal-Mart has inked a deal to buy 2 MILLION Chinese HD-DVD players?

Check out the discussion over at AVS. There's a bunch of ****-for-tat regarding the translation of the Chinese news release and some confusion about "Blue Laser HD-DVD" possibly referring to Blu-Ray or both formats, but late in the day there has been confirmation from multiple sources that it is indeed 2 million HD-DVD players.

Not too shabby for a format that Sony has declared dead 17 times already this year...

I don't care which format wins, there both great and provide excellent A/V and while Wally is a big company they cannot make or break a format. But then again, I support both so it really doesn't matter. Right now though, Blu is doing a better job so that is where my support goes.

Besides, if and when Blu prices drop I'm sure Wally will do the same and buy a fleet of those players as well.

I will most likely be getting a PS3 for the Blu Ray capabilities just for this series. I've done some research over the past week, and HD-DVD just seems to be very limited with its abilities for next gen audio. Sure, there's a TrueHD decoded on the Toshiba players, but its only 2 channel. Then the players aren't HDMI 1.3, so it can't pass DTS-HD or TrueHD to a receiver capable of decoding. Its been about a year the technology has been out and its still largely dependent upon the current audio formats. Pretty bad in my book.

2 cents from a Sony hater.

All of the 2nd gen Toshiba HD DVD players do 5.1 TrueHD and 1st gen players had 5.1 TrueHD enabled with 2.0 firmware.

I'm just curious, where did you do your research??

There are HD DVD players that are HDMI 1.3 compliant, more so than BR. The real question is why do you need it, you don't need HDMI 1.3 to pass TrueHD, DTS-HD, or lossless audio.

Gah, I got backordered by Warner's own website. They so underestimated the demand for this. Probably won't be long, and I did get in on the $57 deal, so I'll wait it out.
