Shanling CD T-100
(Actually, this unit goes a little past your range... but I have seen it retail for as low as $1400 new).I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore -
I might get one of the following: Arcam FMJ36 (a little cheaper), Ayre 7e (little more expensive), or Wadia 301 (little more expensive) from the 'Gon.

I would wait until you complete your speaker upgrade. Looking at your components, I would examine if an amp upgrade might provide more benefits than a source upgrade. All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed, second it is violently opposed and third, it is accepted as self evident.

For a bit more look at a Cary 303/300 used on the 'gon. Or if you want to avoid tubes look for the 306/200.

Raysonic CD 128, of course. Not because I have it....but this player is in a much higher league than others in its price range.
How far are you from Glendale? You can go listen to it here:

Price just went up in April 1st to 1,850, but I'm sure they (or Underwood HiFi or Audionut.com) will take less. I got it used with very few hours for 1,200_________________________________________________

Respectfully disagree, my amp will be one of the last to go. It does everything I need it do, plenty of power, grain free treble, and tight deep bass. The CDP buy would be strictly because I don't know how much longer my current player will run, and I'd like to do something "outside" the box this time.
The speaker upgrade is at least a year away, probably longer...Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -

The ones I was looking at seemed to go as low as about $1800 and up to $2200, used.

I'm becoming increasingly convinced that with a high quality DAC, you have to have an astoundingly bad transport before it starts to matter.
That said, you may want to go to a tube CD player, since you're 100% SS and still not satisfied, but to really get any benefit you'd have to bypass the Benchmark.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19

I'm looking to go standalone CDP and sell the Benchmark/CEC sometime in the future. I'd like to try to get away from using an external DAC by bumping my CDP budget up. I'm definitely considering tube players as well. I'm satisfied with the current set-up, just wanting to try something new, with some different sonic character.
The Cary, YBA, and Classe suggestions really have my wheels spinning.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -
dibs on the C.E.C.
man there are just so many quality players available, I bought an opera consonance from pearsall, it was 1200 list and has been replaced with a newer model, it will fit your budget nicely and is an awesome player that really does not get much play here, just sort of lost in the shuffle.
here a linky for some info on them

Well, you could get the MF tube buffer they were on sale for 299.00 at Music Direct, go out of the Benchmark to the tube buffer then to the pre, more connections but I do like the MF tube X-box stuff and use one with my Denon cd player.

Not putting down the A3CR but would personally put the money in a good tube pre first.

The Quad 99CD-P/2 is an outstanding CDP for the money @ $1350 new. I used it with a tubed pre. When Carl (schwarcw) put it in his all SS system though he said it was fatiguing after a couple of hours of listening. The MF tube buffer fixed that.Salk SoundScape 8's * Audio Research Reference 3 * Bottlehead Eros Phono * Park's Audio Budgie SUT * Krell KSA-250 * Harmonic Technology Pro 9+ * Signature Series Sonore Music Server w/Deux PS * Roon * Gustard R26 DAC / Singxer SU-6 DDC * Heavy Plinth Lenco L75 Idler Drive * AA MG-1 Linear Air Bearing Arm * AT33PTG/II & Denon 103R * Richard Gray 600S * NHT B-12d subs * GIK Acoustic Treatments * Sennheiser HD650 *

I'd spend $500 - $600 on a new or used tube CDP (Jolida, Bada, etc.), spend another $300 to modify it, and spend the remainder to upgrade your amp. Mods will provide a bigger bang for buck. Having owned a Parasound 1200II, I have to agree with jm1. It's was OK for HT, but for music, it's probably restricting the potential of your MF, DAC, and transport.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub
