Ok, I said it. Yeah, I'm a little embarrassed, but what the heck. Read on...

I just returned from Vegas Friday and decided we would check out Barry Manilow's "Music and Passion" show at the Hilton. Keep in mind, I'm not a fan, but hey---there isn't a bad show in Vegas, and this concert proves it.

I was impressed.......no, I was in AWE. Excellent show, period. His voice was strong, the music fantastic, the stage presenation, exciting. Even if you're not necessarily a fan, a hellava show to see. Next time you're in Vegas, Barry Manilow is a must see.

ALSO:

Cirque Du Soliel "O" show at Bellagio, another eye-candy MUST SEE. One look at the stage will tell you why tickets average $125 each. It was awesome, and worth every penny.

So, who's the hot chick who got picked up to sing "I can't smile without you" with him that night, Stevie? :)

Other than the plastics, I thought he is a very good entertainer..
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

Barry Manilow is an extremely talented singer/song writer who has had a 30+ yr career. He must be doing something right!

Or in other words he is a real musician. There aren't too many artists today that will be around as long as he's been.

Talent is talent, if some of you so called audiophiles would look past the lyrics to the music & showmanship you would see what I mean.

Both were/are professionally trained musicians, you can tell that when sitting at a piano. If you listen to the arrangements, instruments & how the vocal harmonies compliment them perfectly.

Jazz At The Pawnshop isn't really my style of music, but I looked past it to hear some really talented musicians go to town. Michael Jackson is one wierd SOB, but he is one of the most talented musicians on the planet whose contribution to the world of music will be remembered long after he is gone.

Liberace laughed all the way to the bank & brought enjoyment to lots of people with his showy ways & outstanding piano skills BBL. When you can do the same for such a long time, do let us know.

Steve, there is no need to be embarrassed by enjoying a musical performance by such a talented entertainer, He was obviously worth the money you spent for tickets.

To be 60+ years old & still have such a strong voice & pull in the kind of audiences that he is able to do is just GREAT!

    Yeah, him and Liberace.

Not that that's a bad thing.

MJ can sing, dance and change colors all at the same time but I have never seen him play an instrument. I understand he is more of a technical director. You don't see talent like that everyday.

A musician is a person who plays or composes music Musicians can be classified by their role in creating or performing music:

A singer (or vocalist) uses his or her voice as an instrument.
An instrumentalist plays a musical instrument.
Both singer and instrumentalist can be improvisers, who create real time music.
    Composers and songwriters write music.
A conductor coordinates a musical ensemble.
Musicians may also dance or produce choreography. The concept of the musician and the status of the musician in society varies from culture to culture.

Musicians can be either amateur or professional. Professional musicians are paid musicians who use performing as their main source of income. They may work freelance, enter into a contract with a studio or record label, be employed by a professional ensemble such as a symphony orchestra, or be employed by an institution such as a church or business (such as a bar). An amateur musician is someone for whom music is a pastime and not their main occupation. Musicians usually attempt to attain a high level of proficiency, constantly practicing to develop the skills needed to perform their chosen style. For example, the practice of scales and modes by Instrumentalists.

So yes Ted, MJ does meet the criteria of the term musician in several catagories.

Nope, just like most rappers aren't musicians. I'll give way on that comment to artists such as RZA/Bobby Digital and the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan since they actually do almost all of their own stuff save for some of the various beat samples they use.

A lot of us can sing, but despite the definition, I think unless most of us can do arrangements and play an instrument we're not not really musicians.

MJ is merely a talented artist and dancer, just like Prince.

Nothing wrong with liking BM music. I like his 70s stuff. I highly recommend the Essential Barry Manilow CD on Arista/Legacy. The sound is excellent. The only gripe I have is that they didn't use the single mix of "Copacabanna". However, they did use the 45 single version of "Could It Be Magic".

It was beautifully mastered by Vic Anescini.

I think MJ was sort of a Jack of all trades. If I recall he could play guitar, drums, & piano, but I don't think he was accomplished at any of them.

For me, good live performances are the pinnacle of an artist's career. For a time back in the 90's, I went to see Hootie and the Blowfish. Terrible concert. They showed up. They sang. They went home. The following week, Alanis Morissette had a good, fun performance. Afterwards, I watched Rod Stewart bring down the house as he drop kicked soccer balls into the stadium.

Tapes, records, and CD's are substitutes for live performances. I guess that's why we spend $$$$ in order to close our eyes to feel the performance in our homes.

Thanks, Steve. I'll have to check him out the next time I'm in Vegas. Haven't been back in 8+ years.

    Prince isnt a musician?

I'm not a fan of his, but do you have any idea how many songs he wrote? not to mention more than a few guitar players I know....as much as they dont like his music....acknowlege that he is a very talented guitarist, aside from being a top notch music writer.

again, I'm no where near a fan here
