Question About Mounting a Flat Panel Monitor

Just looking for some opinion/feedback on mounting a SMALL 20" flat panel monitor (weight approx 14lbs.) in our bedroom. I purchased a mounting bracket for mounting to a single stud (bracket weight is < 4lbs). The only problem is that the wall space available for mounting does not contain a stud in the correct location (center of the wall). It is a small section of wall space between a doorway and a closet approx. 24" across and, unfortunately, the only available space.

Would it be possible to use 2 "molly" screws (NOT plastic anchors) through the bracket & drywall. Total weight would be < 20lbs.

Thanks in advance.

I think that would work. I've hung things more than 20lbs in drywall using some decent plastic anchors w/o any issues. . . however, it wasn't a $500 breakable object so I wasn't overly concerned.

I would just ask someone for help at your neighborhood hardware store, Home Depot, or Lowe's. Or, someone will probably chime in here with a better response. . . eventually.

Good luck! If you have 8 deep anchored screws, I think you should be okay.

For the size of that screen I say it's ok not to use a stud, but I wouldn't use anything other then a Toggle Bolt.

Thanks, guys. My terminology was slightly off in saying "molly" but actually meaning "toggle".

Looks like 2 toggles will work based on the link provided by AndyGwis.

    +2

Get a BIG one. The problem with a tv mount is that the force of the TV will want to pull the top toggle out of the wall and push the bottom mount down through the wall. If the mount has an extendable arm it will need to be stud mounted. The further from the wall the greater the pull-out force on the top bolt.

    No extendable arm, flush-mount only.

    Use Hilti anchors.
