Question about power amps

Since Im having a hard time getting a beefy Adcom GFA 7807 (300x7), I was wondering if there would be a significant difference in that or using 5 additional M2200s(200x 1) with the 2 I have now. I guess what Im trying to say; is the 100 watt difference really going to matter? If the difference is small then I wont really worry about it, but if it is, I guess I have to pay for shipping. Any advice?

I do not think going to 300WPC will make a noticeable difference, and you really don't need a lot more than 100 WPC for your sides/rears (smaller speakers, less sound going to those channels).
I would still try to get 200watts for the center, but wouldn't be so worried about the rest. You could even try driving them with your AVR and see if you like it.

The only difference will be in the sound. Adcom and Outlaw sound very different. The extra headroom of Adcom would be nice also. I say hold out for the Adcom a little longer, if you can. The Outlaws will do the job nicely too if you can't wait and have the room for all those pieces.

    I agree with HTRookie.

I'll add one thing -- save your money and buy one more M2200 for the center channel and power the four remaining speakers with your receiver.

IMO, it doesn't make sense to spend a lot of money on a separate power source for all speakers, but the signal is being fed by an AV receiver. If you're gonna get a muscular 7-channel amp, you might as well go all the way and get a separate processor. Otherwise, you won't be getting the most out of your amp.

That's hard to say........IMHO, I prefer the Adcom in this situation. HTrookie has given you a great alternative. For HT use you may not notice much difference in the sound. I'm not an HT guy, so I guess I can't really appreciate your dilema. EarlyB and HTrookie have given you a solid alternative.

Sherarp, I would think adding another M200 to round out your front soundstage would be sufficient. The surrounds should be fine just off your AVR.

Now, if you plan to go with LSis or something else down the road, a multi channel amp and pre/pro combo would probably be best. . . but RTi4s and FXs are pretty easy to push and it would be a waste to only have your Sony ES doing processing duties.

BTW, what are your thoughts on HD-DVD (A1) versus your BR player? What do the faces signify next to each?

While most tend to discount the back channels, I would like to point out that they DO benefit from additional power just like the front stage does. So long as the receiver does a good job at decoding & what not it is not going to waste.

I also see this way, if all of your channels are amped, it makes it all the easier to go straight to a prepro once you have decided to upgrade your receiver.

Man I've been reading all these posts on HT amps and stuff and I gotta say I never really took this all seriously when it came to HT. I always viewed 2 ch sound as trying to acurately reproduce music/performances and therefore needing the necessary, accurate, pure gear and HT as sound effects and just needing gear that would produce sound effects. I guess I have a lot of home work to do if I am to get the most out of an HT rig.

Joe, For your HT set-up that NAD T773 beast of a receiver you have will fit the bill nicely. I don't think you need to concern yourself with outboard amps. But then again, knowing you I might be wrong here!!!!LOL:D

Joe, you'll be ok. I have my RTi speakers powered by a Denon receiver. It gives me all I want for HT, and I like it loud & clear. I don't think I'll ever put an external amp there....and you all know how much I suffer from upgradeitis....
    For 2 channel, it's a different story.

Well I think I will just add 3 more Monos to the 2 I currently have. That will put one on each speaker on the front soundstage, plus one per each new FXi5 side surround. I will use the Denon 4308ci for my rear Rti4s.

As for the Blu Ray/HD DVD comparison, I do enjoy both formats. With all the new titles coming to HD DVD and price you simply cant go wrong there. On almost every HD DVD title I've watched the PQ/SQ seems on point everytime. The Sony BRp is very nice, however I cant say that every title on BR has the same pop effect as HD DVD. I watched Flyboys last night and the PQ/SQ was second to none, it was definitely on point with HD DVD. I just think BR should be more consistent with the PQ/SQ of HD DVD, and lately it some what has been. Either way though, I enjoy both.

I've got a denon 785 s It's 80 watts x 7ch. I have an adcom gfa 555 powering my fronts which is pushing 325/ch. the sound stage all around is even there is no jump in volume from 1 speaker to another. Just make sure you set it up right and you will be fine. I had to decrease the volume of the fronts in order tho match it with the rest of the speakers, but it's only down by 2 db's. and center is turn way high up(because it's junk and inefficient). Nice thing about the receiver is when I switch to 2 ch it sets the gain back to 0 (or what ever I last had it set at)and I have full volume. I would say if you are going to use separate amps for you speakers keep the the same brand to help keep voicing the same all the way around. I have decent results with my setup, but I am also not using matched speakers, so at this time separate amplification for the center, sides and rears would be a waste as of right now for me.

Having matching speakers has nothing to do with the sound quality you get Dude. None of my speakers match either, but all sound great with the separate amplification. What's important is to calibrate all of them so that they are even.
