Well, its in my mailbox right now, and I am stuck at work. I'll photo document the whole thing and post my early impressions soon.
-
Snapped some pics of the unload, installing software.
This thing is much lighter than I expected. Well less than a pound, and much smaller than I imagined too! I shot a pic of it next to a DVD for comparison.
So far, its totally, entirely, completely baller. -
Just some quick thoughts:
This thing is very, very light. Probably less than a pound.
The way its laid out, with the ergonomic design, location of the IR transmitter, if your hands are not small, one-handed operation is possible.
It has codes for everything. Literally. It had the codes for my chinese CDP, and not joking, I think it had codes for video game consoles from the 80s.
Extremely simple to setup. The setup wizard is very smart and for the most part asks all the right questions.
Battery life isn't the longest, but should go 2 to 3 days without being recharged.
There is a noticeable delay between me executing a command, and it registering with that particular device, specifically my DVR. Say, I push up channel 7 times, thinking that it didn't register the first 6, it will slowly but surely move the channel 7 times. Not that big of a deal, I just have to adapt.
The buttons are suprisingly intuitive. Logitech must have done their homework for when it comes to customer preferences. I have had to do very little customization to the button mapping.
Yes, it does have the codes for the Polk XM Tuner.
Overall, I give it a 9.5 out of 10. It is highly recommended. Even my wife got past her reluctance to admit its in her words "pretty damn cool." -

Had the same problem with my 520. If you go into the setup, there is a delay setting, I can't remember what the default was, but after setting the delay to 0, that trouble went away. -

I did a similiar thing on my 880. -
So was the 1000 worth the additional money that you would have spent on a 880 or 890? I had my wife look at pics of the 1000 and the 880 and then gave her the prices. She likes the look of the 1000 so I am considering it at this time. I need to get rid of ALL the remotes as it is becoming a real pain.Michael

The new Harmony 1000 works great. The support people at Logitech are great even to the point of coverting RF codes to IR codes. These people are passionate about making their customers happy.Michael

Nice! I'd sacrifice all my remotes for a Harmony 1000 at $295 sealed. -
Amazon is selling them new for about $320 right now. Much better than when I got it.

Harmony 880 -
I have a H1000 that I bought recently, replaced a Sony. I love it. A lot of people complain about it not doing stuff right over on AVS but its works for what I got. My WIFE uses it so it cant be all that bad. well, she did mention that its not turning on my Sony TV now without using "help". Gotta fix that, probably add a delay to that command.Testing

Its either an issue with delay or she's not pointing the remote correctly.

Is it worth upgrading from an 880 to the 1000?
It has pretty much the same functionality to it. It adds RF signals, so if you don't have a direct line of sigh to a device you can add an RF extender. The main difference between the two remotes is aesthetic and feel.
So my answer is, it depends on what you think is lacking in the 880. -
Okay, tonight I finally sat down with the remote and really monkeyed around with it. Conclusion; I am even more impressed and happier with this remote now than I was before the night started.
You can change the background. There are 5 or so other backgrounds that come stock with the remote. The pixel size of the remote is 320x240, and as such the picture must be so. If its not the image will be scaled back/streched to fill the screen. Simple pictures only. With all the buttons on top, busy pictures probably aren't the best choice. I found that the backgrounds that come with Vista make great backgrounds for the remotes. The Vista ones come at 5 times the size that is right for the remote. So, just shrink it down 20% for both height and width, and there you have a perfectly scaled image for your remote. I went with a nice green leaf (not marijuana) and it looks awesome.
Also, you can run a slide show on your remote while its charging in the cradle. I have not tried this yet, but I think its an awesome option. It should be noted that this option was not available right away, but apparently Logitech listened to its customers and included this functionality with a software update. Very cool!
You can rename devices and activities. So, instead of "Play Xbox 360" you can have it say "Xbox" or "Pick Up Them Sticks". I went with the latter.
Adding new devices is a breeze. It has the Wii and Microsoft Zune in its library of IR commands. It cannot actually control the Wii, but knows it exists for devices.
One of the main things I set out to find tonight, and now I have found it and used it. You can set your cable box, DVR, PVR, whatever you want to call it, you can tell your Harmony to just leave it on. Our cable box IR sensor is not always in the line of sight, so, sometimes the remote would hit it, other times not. Anyways, point is, often times the cable box was not in sync with the remote. That will no longer be a problem as it will just stay on from now forward. Rad.
