Soon to arrive is my most recent purchase, my new Logitech Harmony 1000 Universal Remote.

9499_large.jpg

I got it for the following reasons;

- I miss having a good universal remote
- Good reviews
- It works with everything I have, or will get in the future
- Asthetically, its gorgeous, and thats really what counts

In person pics with a mini review to follow.

    Nice remote...

I'm still sticking it out until Logitech comes out with a Blutooth/IR remote. My 880 will work for now...

    ****,

I will be interested in your review. For years I owned the Sony Commander series which is Sony's answer to the touchscreen remote. I got tired of having to use two hands, having to wipe off the touchscreen all the time (i.e., no cheetohs), and having such a large remote. So I switched to the Harmony 880 and haven't been happier.

I will be watching for your review to see if my life will one day have to go full circle, and return back to the touchscreen. :D

Im highly considering this when I get all my final pieces - freaking 5-6 remotes suck. Looking forwards to your thoughts.

I've had a 1000 since the first of January, although they didn't come out until Feb(neighbor works for Logitech's primary U.S. distribution center and the pres of Logitech handed them out to higher up employees at Christmas.

Anyway, I like the button placement, and I like the touchscreen sensitivity. One problem though, it died. It hasn't been dropped or abused that my wife and I can tell. Once in a while, it would lock up, so we would remove the battery, reinsert it, and it would be fine. It locked up on Wednesday, and it never came back on when we replaced the battery.

When it worked, we liked it. It didn't do everything I wanted it to, but I am very picky, so most people will be just fine with it.

That remote sure is purdy. I really like my Harmaony 890 as well. It's simple enough for a blonde like me to use it and it runs it all.

Can the Harmony's turn peripherals on in sequence, almost macro like. As well, can you have it programmed for more than one system. For example two tv's in to different rooms.

I need a universal remote as the count is now up to 4 5 and it is becomming a real pain in the ****. What is the main difference between the 880 and the 890. Thanks.
BTW, Congrats on that nice one.

Yes, you can run multiple systems. It will make the macros for you, but you can also go in and change things around, add delays, etc.

Yes, you can program all sorts of macros with delays and everything.

The other reason I got it was for the home automation capabilities of it. It has RF output, which is compliant with the ZWave standard for automation products.

So, you can push an activity button of "Watch DVD", it will turn on the TV, DVD player, receiver (with the right input selected), adjust the sub output, and dim the lights. All with one button.

True, very true. Now that I have purchased gear with a higher price tag, my wife is very nervous about turning things on and off.
The other annoying thing is with the cable companies. I am not sure how it works for you folks, but I have digital cable and will be going to HD in about 3 weeks. I need to use their remote to access the cable listings. Will this 1000totally replace that unit as well? It would actually have to interface with the cable box. This seems to be a regional thing (service provider). This is one thing that really bothers me.

It should be able to replace your cable box remote too. My 880 runs my Dish Network Dual Tuner DVR without any issues and I didn't loose any functionality. It did take a little tweaking to get everything right, but it wasn't a big deal.

Zach, what did it NOT do for you?

And another thought. I own a CDP that has a remote, but does not turn the unit on/off. I guess that would require physically turning the CDP on as there is a lack of functionality.

Is there a list of equipment that the Harmony remotes supports that I can read before buying one of them?

FWIW, most CDPs that dont have a standby switch intend for you to leave the unit on 24/7 from what I understand.

Infact, my CDP locates the button on the side to further make its point.

Yep, will make your CDP last alot longer. Same reason you leave your amps on all the time.

I pretty leave all my gear on all the time - keeps it warmed up and ready to roll when Im ready.

Only thing I turn off regularly is my DVDP.

So I should be leaving my amp on 24/7 even though I might only use it 4-5 hours each evening?

    Yep,

Keeps the caps charged - yada yada yada.

Particularly amps man. Since caps takes about 1-3 days to charge fully, depending how much capatinance(sp) they can hold...

There were some discreet codes in their database that weren't quite right for my demo tv. Switching from component 1 to hdmi 2 never seemed to get done right. Although there is an easy fix, Harmony's button editing feature takes too much time.

If I leave my amp in standby mode when I'm not using it, is that considered "On" also?

    I would think so -

But Ive never seen an amp with a standby feature? Or do you mean a trigger? In which case, i do not think so - that is equiv. to turning it off.

funny i have been thinking about the same thing..I have a Sony 3000 and the thing has been great for me for 3-4 years, but it is really heavy and large..

I was thinking of getting the 880 as well..

I assume the 880 is MUCH lighter and smaller?

Caps in an amp fully charge in milliseconds, no matter how large. They discharge and recharge constantly when playing music.

Much lighter. You can easily use one hand to control everything. Also with the tilt sensor of the 880, the remote lights up when you pick it up rather than having to touch a key like the sony.
