My DVD player is sick!

I was putting in a CD and the player accepted it and read it. I hit play and it sounded garbled and the player shut down. I unplugged and left overnight. This morning I plugged it in and it powers up and starts to read the disc and shuts back down(can't turn it back on). :( I unplug again and wait and the same scenario happens. My player is a Panasonic RP-91.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. Oh, CD is still in there, Zep 4.

Thanks, Dave

yeah. get a laser lens cleaner.. that thing is filty dirty... ;) when you rent DVD's from the video store. they are in horrible condition... scratches, dust, fingerprints.. etc.. you need to get a laser lens cleaner.. it will usually solve most problems with players not reading discs. have fun. :)

But will that cause the player to shut off and not come back on? I have to unplug to get it to come back on, have not been able to retrieve disc out.

Maybe try and google your particular model to find if it's a common problem. I have a Pioneer (2 of them) and I found out *after* it failed that my particular model had a very high failure rate. Atleast I got about 2 years worth of use out of the unit not a couple months like you.

I did a google search and really found nothing. I just did another and changed the wording and found one hit and it sounds like it is the spindle motor. $36 dollar part but I don't have the expertise to do it myself.

If it's only a couple of months old, why not have it fixed under warranty?

Is it possible that when the tray closed that the CD wasn't seated properly and now the CD has jammed the tray in the closed position?

Not under warranty, bought used. It could be jammed but I don't think so. If I were to take the top off, would the disc be right there? The hit I found on the web sounds exactly like my problem.

I don't know about taking the top off and seeing the disc. I've got a Panasonic VCR/DVD player and I've never any problems with it. Why not take the top off and see what the disc is or isn't doing?

Hindsight is 20/20. Should've just bought the Oppo. But, does anybody know what is reasonable to pay to replace the spindle motor? It was a top of the line player. What does anyone think is worth paying? Please don't say what it is worth to you. Honest opinions please.

    Thanks, Dave

With the part and an hour worth of labor charges, your at 100 bucks, and no
way of knowing if that will fix all it's problems. You can easily buy a new player for that kind of money.Or a better used one.Anyway,up to you on how to spend a c-note.

I had a panasonic (though I can't recall the model number now) for about four years and had the exact same problem. Is there an error messgae on the display right before it shuts down? Mine said "H2O". I called customer service and they diagnosed it as a spindle motor drive or some such. I asked the guy if it would be worth it to fix it and he basically laughed at me. Ordered the Oppo that night!

It seems the spindle motor was more of an issue than I thought. I researched b-4 buying and didn't see anything on it. now it's popping up for a few folks. Bummed.
