Interconnects or Speaker Cables or Both

I have worked in electronics for over 12 years now, 10 of those years in a calibration lab. I'll say that when testing RF or microwave cables/equipment we check the output of every connection. This way you can properly determine where losses are coming from in a system.
That being said, since ICs are connected closer to the production source of the original signal, then they have the greatest ability to affect the total system. However, if your speaker cable isn't as good of a conductor and resistant to standing waves, then you defeat the purpose of having quality ICs. In the lab, we have always used similar cables (target being <1db loss per meter) for all connections in order to create a standard.
In audio applications, since the speakers are the output device, then I'd say the signal being output is only as good as your weakest link..ncmarine
