I've heard that the center channel, "centre channel mini" will be coming out soon. They may also be releasing a larger Strata?! Crazy.

Looking good man. I do really like the dual SVS... they match really well.

Very quickly - OC703 is fiberglass insulation from owens corning that has very good sound absorption properties in the mid-hi end audio frequency spectrum. It is used by audio nuts to tame room reflections. Doubled, tripled, quadrupled up it can even absorb low frequencies and is used to fill baffles for bass traps in corners. It is available in 2'x4' sheets in varying thicknesses. I used 2" thick panels.

If you search for OC703 and audio related words you'll find a lot information on the subject. Best bet is probably to go to avsforum.com and search through the "home theater design and construction" forum.

My construction method was simple - I framed them in 3/4" ponderosa pine that was 3" wide, using pocket hole screws. Ordered very thin black fabric from joann.com and glued and stapled the fabric on. they're hung on the walls using standard picture hanging methods.

They do a very good job of helping to ensure that the sound you are hearing is coming directly from the speakers as intended, and not bouncing around your room, messing up the soundstage and frequency response. Moving just a single panel can have an affect on a room response graph (as can a couch, etc..)

Very good explanation - thanks for taking the time. I'm not quite to the level of audio where I could justify the time and cost for either building these or buying them. But they do look very nice and I can only imagine how sweet your 2-ch and HT sounds... *drool* :)

I spent @ 1 1/2 hours with Mike (Schwingding)and his beautiful and impressive rig. The room looks even better in real life. We did the SVS demo first with the plane crash scene from Flight of Phoenix. I had never seen it before and it was quite impressive in terms of bass energy and surround sound with his Onix Mini Strata's in front and Mirage OM-10's for surround duty.

Then we unanimously opted for the 2 channel and multi-channel music genre. This is where Mikes Onix Mini Strata's shine. They have great presence and texture. We listen to some great acoustic music and some Latin jazz that was out of this world. Mike also had a bevy of demo cd's that really revealed how realistic the Mini Strata's are. The one thing that both of us were surprised with was how good some regular format CD's could sound in comparison to SACD's.

I will have to say it is great to get together with some one who also shares the passion for music, music reproduction and the equipment it takes to reproduce the music. We made tenative (sp) plans to get together again once Mike receives his Jolida and experience everything again through the tubes.

Thanks to Mike for opening up his door to me and if any of you other Polkies get a chance to experience a fellow Polkies system don't hesitate.

Very nice room for sure. I have been thinking about those speakers for a little while now as well. Being Canadian really is an obstacle however.

I wonder though if my 80 watts of tubes can satisfy them. Mind you they are only 1 db less efficient than my Polks and I can play them way louder than what I am comfortable listening.

    Thanks,

Should be fine... 80watts is good for it. Especially when AV123 packages that 30+ watter integrated tube amp with it, I think you're doing fine.

What Joey said; I am running the SDA's with 60 tube watts and they drive them good; I am not missing any bass/dynamics compared to 200 SS watts.
    Love it.

Curious as to how you have the strata's set up, I have a pair myself and love the.

For 2 ch music do you still use the SVS' along with the powerd woofers of the Strata's or are you going with just the powerd stratas? Likewise for HT do you shut off the woofers on the Strata's. Are you hooking up the strata woofers with the supplied jumper or are you going with an LFE out from your preamp and using the pre's crossover.

Did you experement with any other options?

    BTW, that room looks awesome.

How do you like the sound of 5 monoblock's? I've heard that even Outlaw says not to do multiple mono's. Do you feel the sound would be any different if you had an Outlaw 5-channel?

5 Ch amps... are no good. ;)

Well for starters if a channel goes out, you are out an amp.

With 5 mono blocks you get 5 transformers - and to me, that alone is worth the extra money.

Also, when everybody demo's their speakers in room do any of y'all ever demo them with rock & roll? And what I mean by rock & roll I mean really hard heavy metal. I mean I'm talking about like Lamb Of God, Bleeding Through, Atreyu, 36 Crazyfists, Killswitch Engage.......Does any of these bands sound familiar? That's all I listen to and was just wondering how many other Polkies demoed their speakers with heavy metal?

Demoing with heavy metal is almost like running in a circle.

    You arnt really going anywhere.

Now I listen to alot of rock and heavy metal.

So I will throw in songs to demo along with it. But the only way to see what a speaker is capable of is some strings, jazz, nice female vocals, well thought out instrument placement - complicated orchestras - the whole 9 yards.

So do you have to demo that "crap" music (sorry to offend anybody I apologize) to see what your speakers are capable of? Heavy metal and/or "softer" rock & roll is all that will ever be played on them besides movies/tv.

As you age you will find your musical tastes changing so what the heck you may find a great set of speakers that have been demo'd will all kinds of music and you find a use for them down that unknown road.:)
