Jolida JD100 tube cdp didn't improve my tube rig

I was a little disappointed that this cdp didn't improve my tube rig but I'm not knocking it because when I tried my Ah! Njoe Tjoeb tube cdp, it was pretty much the same results. More boom and bam which my ears do not like. I prefer detail and clarity over loud and boomy.

I learned that upgrades don't always work for every system. My tube rig was already magical to me so I shouldn't have tried to monkey with it. I attribute alot of the magic to the old stock siemens e188cc's I installed in my Sunfire classis tube pre- awhile back and it came to life like I never thought possible.

I'm trying the Jolida on my all solid state system right now which is a no no, slap my hands and hope to die. Keep the solid state rig all solid state grasshopper focus grasshopper focus. It's sounding pretty nice with some Jewel and Clapton so far but they always sound good to me.

The Jolida came used for $600 local pickup with 2 sets of EH tubes but I immediately put some telefunken ecc83's in it.

My plans are to keep the Sony C2000ES SACD in the tube rig.

Is that where you have it mounted? or is that just for the picture?
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

That's temporary while I test it on the solid state rig. That way I didn't have to move stuff around.

I have mixed tube and sand with excellent results.

I take it the tubes and the unit in general have some time on them? I know many of the guys have had to change tubes to find the sound they wanted.

If you were playing mostly SACD in the Sony, well, I found SACD to be better than Redbook on the Jolida, but that is not exactly a news flash. Sony does do SACD well, they ought to afterall.

Yes, the placement on the TT??

It's probably the mercury content in the solder or some such.

I would at least suggest getting it on a nice solid surface before giving up per se. Hey, like you said, not everything works in this hobby.

I'm running solid core ic's throughout, either AQ jaguars or king cobras. On the tube rig it was sitting on a solid wooden shelf in my rack. Swept for mercury. No traces found.

I read somewhere else in these parts that black IC's sound better because the keep the signal warmer. Mine are green. They sound fine.:D

Just make sure you use the correct color.

You said it BDT. I preferred the tube CDP's in my set up. I tried to go SS but it just didn't take.

When I introduced the Ah! just recently into my system,I immediately noticed that the sound was warmer? To me it sounded less digital, less harsh, especially in the high end,not analogue mind you,but that mellow tubey kind of warmth,,if that makes sense. Mine has the upsampler, with amperex 7308's,, and I think that Rich (scomp) had good results with Ediswan. Now I comparing it to an older Rotel 965, which to me sounded somewhat sterile and bright. For me the combination of tube and solid state has made my system more listenable--hope this makes sense. :)

There's your problem, they suck in that player. Get some Sovtek LPS or Ei Elites and change the power cord too.

I just rolled a pair of Sovtek 12AX7's our new Jolida...and SON OF A ****,what a difference a pair of inexpensive tubes can make.

I also have a pair of Ei Elites GP's coming tomorrow,if they sound any better than the Sovtek's I will be amazed:D

I've heard that the Telefunkens don't work well with the JD100 sometime back. this summer I plan on doing some tube rolling with both the Jolida and the Onix SP3. Who knows what will happen.

I tried running a pair of NOS JAN GE 12AX7WA - that I run in my integrated's preamp - in the JD100 CD player; it was a no-no. Like a wet blanket had been draped over the speakers. From that I gathered that trying to run a "tubey" tube in the CD player was a bad idea. My strategy now is to run clean signal tubes in the cd player and place the "magic" tubes in the preamp.

damn that's good news. tube rolling was plan b but I was being stubborn about it thinking that I liked the telefunkens in the ah! so I thought the same would be true for the jolida. I have some EH's I can try and some JJ's ecc803's. But that still doesn't explain why the ah! didn't sound good on this system and I like the way it sounds with my audio experience symphonies pre- and golden tube se100. I was thinking a tube cdp may not match up well with the sunfire.

My ah! has the upgrades but the jolida is supposed to be stock but it looked like some dampening material inside when I put the telefunkens in but I didn't pay close attention to it cause I was anxious to try it out.

Although it's all subjective, I didn't really care for either the EH's or JJ EC803's. I had some NOS Sylvania's and GE's that worked well. I tried some Bugle Boys and they didn't really do much for me though. I'd definitely try several in there before giving up.

I took your advice and put in some groove tubes to start with instead of the eh's or jj's and so far so good. A little DS BIA, a good nights sleep and some knowledge from better minds than mine and tis sounding quite nice.

I left the cover off for now and I'm shocked how much the cd wobbles. It's a wonder the laser can track it unless the laser wobbles with it. I guess this is where oversampling and all that comes into play.

EH's were definitly too bright on my Jolida, went right to the Ei elites and havent moved since.

let the player play on repeat for a day or 2 straight when you put the new tubes in too. my player (got it new) sounded horrendous when I got it, but after new tubes and break in for 3 days straight, sounded sweet.

The groove tubes were used so I'm thinking they're broke in already. I'm impressed with them. They seem to be a in my face kind of tube but it's that warm tube sound so I may leave them in for a while and with steve smith on drums and neal schon on guitars and ross valory on bass and jonathan cain on keyboards and steve perry on vocals playing their 1996 album trial by fire, I'm groovin'. The guitar licks, the piano runs and the vocals come out front and center and make their presence known without being overwhelming or harsh.

I had this player and had some EH's in there. I did not like them at all. However, I didn't find them bright I found them to be really veiled and muddy sounding.....just my experience anyway.

Yeah, if I remember correctly, I found the EH's the same as Mick. The JJ ECC803's, otoh, were definitely on the bright side and a little too 'in your face'. The Sovtek LPS's might have been a tad like that in the beginning but then they seemed to mellow out nicely.

My experience with the Sovtek LPS's and the Ei Elites was that they were indeed on the bright side when new but after about 8 to 10 hours of burn in they mellowed out real nice. I prefer the Ei Elite GP's over the Sovteks but that's not to say the Sovteks sound bad, far from it as they sound pretty good.

I had some Sovtek's (but the WA version...not as good) and then tried the Ei Elites. I didn't listen much after installing the Ei's as I sold it. That player was extremely dynamic with the Ei Elites...I really could see how most would like it. However, the player just wasn't to my overall tastes. It was very dynamic but just still too digital sounding and mechanical to me. However, I don't think I really got enough time on the Ei's to pass judgement.

So why the hell did I post this response? :D

    Thanks,

Has anyone heard the old stock telefunken ecc803s's that sell for around $1000 a pair? I guess they might be worth it if they sound that good and last a lifetime (10,000 hours).

The groove tubes I put in the jolida are a little bright but the laid back old stock siemens e188cc's I have in the sunfire tame them down to where I'm enjoying them. I have a feeling guitar players like these groove tubes because they make the guitar licks sound awesome.

OK...correct me if I'm ignorant and wrong here. I mix all kinds of equipment...all the time. I like to sample different combinations of equipment. I just like to play with my toys. I've run my Samsung DVD as a cd player using the audio out to my tube amps. I've sampled old Fisher and HH Scott preamps with Krell amps. I just like to see what sounds differ between different equipment. I have my faves from time to time and I rarely break out the really good stuff (Gordon Gow Mac's and Marantz 8's) but still do just to remind me of why I bought this stuff. If it sounds good.....do it.
