Is there tape hiss on this album? I don't have mine yet.

I do not hear any tape hiss at all.

In the booklet that came with the set, the recording engineer describes the setup. He used a fairly minimalist miking technique connected to a Studer mixer, two Dolby A 361 noise reduction units and two Nagra IV recorders.

The Nagra recorders used 7 inch reels and ran at 15 ips. Each reel only lasted 15 minutes. So, he would start one recorder and before the tape ran out, start up the other recorder, then alternate between them. I guess that he then spliced the tapes together later and you cannot tell where the splices are.

I'm not sure what year the Dolby A unit was invented, but anything recorded prior to the invention of Dolby A will most likely have audible tape hiss on it.

I don't get it. I got mine before you, how did you end up with 280 and me 1850? I guess they are not really worried about the "collectable" part of this advertising reissue campaign.

I initially got a damaged package numbered 571. The replacement ended up being number 280. Go figure.
I'm not buying into this limited edition crap. I own recordings that are true limited editions. They're numbered directly on the package and directly in the recording medium.

That is why I say, "advertising reissue campaign." Not that this isn't worth every penny.

Well, let's see how long they keep selling the "Limited Edition" version of this. One of the reasons I posted my number when I started this thread was to see if there were any repeats or anomalies in the numbering scheme.

Hey the disks are great! Even if they're pulling our chain on the "Limited Edition" thing.

BTW, I have some "Living Stereo" recordings from the late '50's on SACD and I cannot hear a tape hiss on SOME of them. I think it all depends on how well the original was engineered. Everything before 1981 was analog recorded. Most of it without any tape hiss. Why? Dolby did nothing that you couldn't do with a good equalizer.:D

I got the impression that the "limited" part of the limited edition was that they only printed 3000 of the box covers that say "30th Anniversary Edition". I'm sure that after those run out, you can still buy the same 4 discs, but the cover may be different.

Hmmmm, now there's an angle. What we really got was collectable boxes.

This is on my list to buy. I'm used to spending $6.99 for each cd, so this one is spendy. I'm going to start out with the vol. 1 or the double cd. Hope it is as good as everyone here cracks it out to be.

Get the double CD if you can vs vol 1 more music for about the same money. Plus and I hate to start an issue here the double CD must have been burned, or whatever they do, because to me it sounds more airy and open.

Ern Dog...This is a wonderful album. You don't have to buy the SACD right away.
If you like jazz this should be on your short list.

On the Second cd track one is "Over the Rainbow". My daughter who is two Loves The Wizard of OZ caught on to this version and we danced to it for almost 25 minutes until we were wore out. I was glad that even she could enjoy a good recording. :)

Jazz At the Pawnshop 30th Anniversary boxset

US$53.65 shipped to the US. I receive a small discount for being a....ahem....frequent customer.

Amazon UK has it for roughly the same price, but the wait is 4-6 weeks.

Nice price Danny I paid a hell of a lot more than that. It is still worth it though.

Received a package in the mail today. Didn't think this set of SACDs can arrive so soon from Hong Kong....5 days!!

    #2,576 out of 3,000

Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. Just in case I haven't mentioned it, this would be my first tast of "Jazz at the Pawnshop" on any format.

Danny this is the closest sounding, digital recording of JATP, to the LP I've heard. It is very very good.
