FS: Carver AL-III's Ribbon Speakers

It's time to let these go. Carver Amazing Loudspeakers III, with upgraded Infinity woofer. These have been owned by several forum members and I'd like to pass them to the next.
It's funny how things go around; I sold my 1.2 TL's to keep these, and here I am selling them; well, everything happens for a reason, and this led to a pair of 3.1 TL's that IMO are more appropriate for my room, and with crossover modifications got to a whole new level of detail. But the 3.1's are not the ones that are replacing the Carver's detail....the Von Schweikert VR-1's are; amazing little monitors that driven by a modest pair of ASL AV-20's are getting the most listening time.

Anyway....back to the subject. I am rating these speakers 7/10 for some scuffs and vinyl peeling in the woofer's enclosure. The oak fronts are in great shape.
When I got these there was a random buzz coming out from one of them, maybe due to age, maybe due to transportation from origin. I found out that loose ribbons could cause this; each ribbon is attached to the frame by 26 machined screws. I found some of these were not tight, and just turned freely. I removed the ribbon assembly and found that on the other side the nuts were turning with the screws. Easy fix. No buzz now, but thought I should mention this.

SOLD TO SCHWARCW

Edit for pictures.

Sweet, they are moving closer and closer... My plan is working perfectly...
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

These are staying in the family, and moving east. I plan to give my Monitor 7's a rest (for now) and move the AL-III's into the workshop on my vintage rig. My Marantz 510M (250 wpc @ 8 ohm, and stable to 2 ohms) will be powering these. I also have a HSU if I wanted to give the bass a little extension. We'll see! The weather and our travel schedules will delay our rendevous until early March. I'm looking forward to their arrival!

    Willow,

    $750.

    Carl,

That amp should do the job just fine; these are not the most efficient speakers and require lots of power. Try them without a sub first; you might like what you hear.

I'm glad you said we'll see cause dem Infinity woofers did a fine job with the thump. ;) The only thing they I felt the AL-III's lacked was mid bass due to the low cut off (~150Hz) of the crossover. Never did try the active cross over route which would solve that problem. The Infinity woofers spec to 450Hz IIRC if you wanted to go there. Either way, they are a fine sounding speaker.

    Congrats Carl!

If Norm doesn't sell his second pair Saturday, I am sure Carl is welcome to them.:D

Wow! My babies have sure made the rounds!

The lack of low midrange/high bass isn't as noticeable in a smaller room.
Remember, Rich had them in a room larger than some gymnasiums :D

Also, with regards to ribbon buzzing, make sure to only tighten the screws just above and below the area. Never overtighten the adjustment screws!

Enjoy! I've got my other pair sold and they should be picked up this Saturday.

Thanks guys! These things have gone from Norm to Rich, to Noel, to HT and now to me. I certainly want to enjoy them for a while and pass them on to another Polkie in time.

I'll keep the little HSU muted, but ready to roll from 180 Hz down. I'll blend the gain accordingly. I'm looking forward to these awsome speakers. All the previous owners have cherished and cared for them. The performance reviews are well documented in these Forums. Thanks guys! I'm picking them up on Saturday, March 3 or TBA according to weather and scheduled.

I'm looking forward to meeting you Ricardo!

    Mucho agradece!

    Thanks guys! It's been quite a day!:D

I arrived home without a problem. I've got them in the garage for now as I want to tune my ears to the Modwright Sony 999 I got from Rich. I'll get a review up on that soon. So far it sounds great! I've got about three hours of listening in yesterday and today.

HT, I would have loved to come to Mason to spent some time relaxing, listening to music and enjoying your company. I appreciate your traveling to the thriving metropolis of Zanesville, Ohio to meet me. I clocked my return trip, it was 165 miles. The Mapquest said it was 143 miles. It was driving me crazy why I was 20 minutes late. I didn't make any stops and I had a consistent 65-75 mph drive.

I'm glad to have finally met you, thanks for everything!:D
