One set of HD-590 headphones

Purchased in 2003, broken in, but have not seen much use in the past 2 years. Excellent for those that want high, high quality reproduction of their music when playing speakers loud just isn't an option. Will come with original packing material, stock cord, and mini to 1/4" adapter.

8-9/10, just due to age. Otherwise in excellent condition.

Pics to follow tonight.

Asking $110 + shipping.

Are you going to need a headphone amp with these, or do they sound good without? I know some headphones are better than other without external amplification, just wondering about these.

Well, like speakers, all headphones are going to sound, potentially, better with a seperate amp. Most manufacturers that make equipment with a headphone out just do the bare minimum for the headphone section.

That being said, these will still be amazing using the standard out with whatever device you are using. They will work great and sound great with an ipod, CD player, computer speakers, you name it.

How flat do they play? I'm in the market for a new pair of high quality monitors and these might fit the bill.
Lovin that music year after year.

    I agree with Shizelbs.

I have a pair of HD-580's that I've run off a 555ES and it drives them just fine.....but they sound MUCH better(warmer) on an external amp, ala the MF X-CAN V3 that I use currently.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

How flat? Well, I will say they are more laid back and warmer than most headphones out there. Grados tend to be on the brighter side.

On thing that should be mentioned. These are very comfortable. They sit around the ear and on your head. The pads are a very soft velvet. They can be worn comfortably for several hours.

I have these same headphones that I use at work. They are very detailed and not really brite. I would call them more neutral than anything.

I really like them. I do not use an amp with mine (run off a laptop most of the time) and they play fine - plenty loud. The 600's definately need an amp from what I understand, but the 590's while benefiting from an amp - do not require it.

    Great can's. (imo)

Edit - forgot about the comfy factor. They can easily be worn for an entire 8 hour workday with no comfort issues.

    Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)

Had a pair of these. They are more comfy than any other set of headphones
I've owned. I would get a cheap headphone amp. Maybe Russman still has that Rolls sitting around?

http://www.headphone.com/ -- $150 for their cheapest amp. I have their $300 model and am very happy with it. Chose it because it can be portable or plugged in, unlike most competitors.

    Hijacking ahead. . .

I just picked up some Senn HD580s off Amazon. Great headphones, my first foray into anything over $25 earplugs, though.

I love the sound, but I can see the open design making them less than desirable for listening on a plane or in any crowded public place. They don't seem to limit outside noise or keep others from hearing the music. . . but, they reproduce music better than anything I could imagine!

They do, however, make listening to my speakers a little less fun since they are so much more detailed :) I run mine straight off my SCD-222ES with it's headphone amp / volume control right on the front and my PE A-35R in the Bedroom. Both are equally good and get a job done really well.

Enjoy Audiobliss! Sorry for rambling, just thought I would pass that along since I'm new to headphones. You're gonna love them.

Yeah, I don't think I'll be too fond of the open design, but I can't wait to hear what kind of detail quality headphones offers. Thanks for the advice!

Don't get me wrong, you will love the sound! For home, office, etc., I don't think you can find a better headphone than the Senn 580/590's for the price.

But, if you crank them on an airplane, you're gonna get some dirty looks from others around you :)

I just ordered the same cans, HD580's. Haven't arrived yet but I had to drag AVR next to my computer since people are saying they won't sound good with a computer soundcard or iPod. PC - Coax digital - HTR5560 - headphones (right now some $10 TDK POS that really do sound horrible). Honestly they are going to be more of a game headphones with an external mic so $130 for a pair might seem like a waste but I was tired of crappy headphones.

I might use them with an iPod on the road so hopefully not too hard to drive.

As for hi-fi cans over 2ch, I don't think I will convert. I have heard Grado 325's before and while they sounded nice (bright, yes) they just don't have the soundstage of a good stereo system, and no impact when it comes to bass. YMMV but to me that is very important.

When they do get here I'll be MORE than happy to talk headphones! I need to start a thread sometime about home and portable headphone amps.

The 590s supposedly don't have as good sound quality as some of the other Senn models, according to "the experts" at Headwize.

    Eff the "experts."

I've had my 590s for a few years now, and you can have them when you pry them from my cold dead hands. :D They are the first set of phones I've ever owned that I can wear for 6+ hours straight without any discomfort or fatigue. My Grado 225s suck moose testicles by comparison.

IMO they need EXTENSIVE break-in (like 100+ hours) before they really sound good. Stick them on a CD player playing a disc has a wide variety of frequencies and volume on repeat for a week or so; don't try them right outta the box.

They are well broken in. They should be great out of the box.

And I used them straight into a sound card for a long time. It sounded awesome. They are very easy to drive. An amp helps of course, but they still sound awesome on anything. They make an iPod sound as good as it can.
