RT55i Help needed for rookie...

I was searching online for information how to troubleshoot my speakers and found this forum. Just a quick browse and I was really impressed how generous everyone was with their knowledge and opinions! Maybe someone can help me out?

I just noticed today that one of my RT55i's sounds terrible. It sounds like it's underwater, or behind a wall compared to the other speaker. I switched the cables to L/R speakers and it was definitely the speaker that was having issues and not my source. Any thoughts? What other information can I provide to help troubleshoot this?

Harman/Kardon AVR240
Front - Polk RT55i
Center - Polk CS245i
Rear - Monitor Series M3

Thanks!

You may have lost a tweeter. Take a paper towel roll, place it up to the tweeter in the suspect speaker with something playing. Place an ear at the other end of the roll, can you hear anything?

If you find that the tweeter is not playing, don't forget to check the jumpers that go between the two sets of binding posts on the back. If your speaker wires are connected to the bottom posts and the jumpers are not in place or aren't tight, the tweeter won't get any signal.

If it is the tweeter, the original tri-lam is no longer made and Polk does not sell them (part #BD0125-W if you can find one). The replacement is a silk dome (#RD6514-3) and I found there to be very little difference in SQ. In fact, I had a tri-lam in one RT55i and the silk in the other for a period of time and you would be very hard pressed to tell the difference. I eventually replaced the tri-lam with the new silk to keep them the same.

THANK YOU jcaut!!! The jumper plate was not secured properly. Problem solved.

I am embarrassed, but happy everything was fixed within seconds.

How much do the newer silk domes cost?

    Hi all,

I recently lost a tweeter on a pair of RT55is and could use some help with replacement instructions. Could anyone point me to the correct procedures for this?

    Thanks in advance.
