Do Not Buy A Ps Audio Duet

A while back I decided to try the new PS Audio Duet power conditioner/. It kept shutting off. I was told at the PS Audio Duet Thread (follow my travails in detail here) all kinds of silly explanations until finally they 'admitted' to having an issue with the voltage protection in the unit and they were re-working the problem.

SO.....the new model gets in and that will solve my problem, right? I get the new one yesterday and it keeps shutting off as well. NOW they tell me that they have no idea what is wrong with it....but they are working on it.

Well I am working on returning another freakin Duet with the shipping on my dime. AGAIN.

I would think they would get it figured out prior to shipping out a new one! Not exactly leading edge customer service, eh! I would move up to a Panamax unit.

I didn't read to whole thread over the other side. But did get the idea that they thought you had a voltage problem or the sub pulled to much from the power cord of the Duet conditioner. You stated that the icon on the Duel was flashing, they stated voltage high or low. My question is did you try unplugging everything from the Duel to see if this icon was still flashing? If so maybe you do have an issue with voltage in your house, a bad neutral connection could be the problem.

I had FPL inside and outside and tested everyrhing. At the end of the thread Paul admits it's an issue with the Duet and not a voltage problem.

Look into some Isotek models. It's a UK company with decent product lines all mains power related.

    Your link doesn't work.

Anyway, their UPC-200's work perfectly as have their previous power conditioners to the best of my knowledge. Shunyata also makes a nice product. Both are better than what else is out there, IMO.

    Darla,

Could you post a rating of the power conditioners you have used now and in the past, a rating of how they sounded how reliable they are? On a scale of 1-10 1 being the worst 10 being the best. Just your $.02 :)

BTW the power conditioner is an AC filter chock / capitors... So a CPU is given them problem confused as a CPU isn't needed to filter AC. Sorry you had some much trouble with it, and you gave us the update. Thank you.

So what I read from you...

I am pulling my blonde card on this one:D

It's kinda difficult for me to really compare conditioners as I have had them in my system with different gear/configurations BUT...

FOR PQ the Richard Gray has been the best by far and for sound I would say that the Duet may have had a slight edge over the Shunyata Guardian but I am not sure and of course the Duet does not work correctly.
If you do not have high current equipment, I always liked my Monster HTS 2500 also.

Those are the only conditioners I have tried.

How have you like the Shunyata? I have been very impressed with them so far, which is one of the reasons I became a dealer.

What power cable are you using with it?

I'm interested in your opinion on the different ones as well, when you get a chance.

I like that the Shunyata is not current limiting which is important as I have my Earthquake Cinenova and one of my SVS subs plugged into it. I have a Shunyata power cord (forget which one) with it. My HT sounds excellent with or without it really but with it my system is a bit quieter.

This is what Paul at PS Audio finally told me on the PS Audio forum:

"Bummer. I have to run out the door so I can't answer completely. However, we believe it is NOT an over/under voltage problem. We believe it is some kind of noise or some mystery "something" getting in to the microprocessor. We can't seem to duplicate it so we're working on figuring out how. We're on it."

Have a look at either of these units for sale:

    BPT 3.5 Signature

    Exact Power EP15a

From personal experience, I can recommend the BPT unit as I have a BPT 2.5 powering my entire system. One day soon I will be adding an EP15a to the system to complete the power conditioning for my system.

A PS audio rep called me today and offered to send me a couple of different power cartridges to try out that they think will solve the problem and asked if I was game to try them out. I said yes so I guess I will see how they do. I guess this would officially make me a full price beta tester.

Do you have to pay to send them back after trying them?

I am presently using the UPC units in the Woodshed, pretty satisfied with them. They can pass 1800 watts. I am using PS Audio xstream cords from the wall to the upc.

I am also considering a jump to the Shunyata Hydra-6 unit which can pass up to 2400 watts, but first I am going to put in a very large power line. The Shed rig gear continues to grow and is power hungry. I have been told and read nice things about the Guardian as well.

I have used the MC in the Reel Time Rig and have run it dry during very heavy bass hits in HT movies when all the speakers are pumping (battle scenes in Return of the King as an example), resulting in a shutdown, however, we are talking reference levels which are really loud to listen to for long.
