I'm reading through the 1 billion post in the AVS 970hd thread. Ths player seems to have a bad "sqeeze" when upconverting. People form everywhere are saying that when watching through HDMI or hacked component, the picture seems short and fat. Has this issue been fixed?

JakeWell, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all

I am on the hack with the latest firmware (Sept06 date) and I don't see any squeeze on standard DVD. Did I miss it?I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie. -
Ok..I'll just shoot Oppo an email.
Thanks guys.

OK...update... I think this is good news for me. I have a friend that will buy my Denon for $100. So I'm thinking to step up to the 981. Or should I just get the 970? I know the upconvert over component hack is for the 970, is there a similar hack for the 981? I do have HDMI on my Mit. So using the upconvert over HDMI wont be problem, unless the picture is better over component. If the there is no hack for the 981 for component, and the picture is better over component, I will get the 970. But I have read the audio management is better with the 981. To sum up my question, for $70, is the 981 a better player all together, PQ SQ?
Jake
The 971 scored highest in the DVD Benchmark test. But I assume this was before the 981. And I didnt see SACD for the 971.Monitor 7b's front

ok there is no component outs on the 981. the sound quality was better on the 970 versus 971 but im not sure about the sound quality of the 981 versus the 970. if your mitsu has 1080p capability i would get the 981 it up converts to 1080p versus 1080i for the 970. i think the picture quality will be better via hdmi on the 981 because of the faroudja chip versus the 970 the sound quality is probablly as good perhaps better on the 981. i would send oppo an email asking them about which player is better for your display. they are honest and will point you in the right direction. Well my Denon has the Faroudje chip...so I'll expect the same PQ.
You know, I just assumed the 981 having component out.
HMMMM...I like the 480p option thru component. This may make a difference in my purchase.
My Mit is a 55513 CRT, so 480i, 480p and 1080i through component, DVI and HDMI.
Nah, I think with the return policy that Oppo has, I will get the 981 and return it if I dont like the features, but I think the 981 is the best choice.
Thanks Snow

When trying to get great video and great audio for under $200 something has to give. In the case of Oppo, the audio takes a back seat to the video capabilities. In the case of the cheap Pioneer decks, the video suffered.
You won't find the best of both at this price point. The Denons have bridged this gap, for years, but never at the $200 level.
I went with a Pioneer DV45A for the last few years and have been happy with it at less than $200, but am going with a Marantz 8260 for CD/SACD and have yet to choose my DVD choice since I am waiting for an HD projector and the new HD player formats to show more promise of staying power.HT Optoma HD25 LV on 80" DIY Screen, Anthem MRX 300 Receiver, Pioneer Elite BDP 51FD Polk CS350LS, Polk SDA1C, Polk FX300, Polk RT55, Dual EBS Adire Shiva 320watt tuned to 17hz, ICs-DIY Twisted Prs, Speaker-Raymond Cable

Gotta agree with Dennis. When trying to get great video and great audio for under $200 something has to give.
Funny how this thread started out with concerns about hi-rez audio, when obviously the greater concern is for video. Hilarious.Political Correctness'.........defined

What I have found over the years is that inexpensive "giant killer" gear rarely is all it is claimed to be. Very good bang for the buck gear...maybe. Giant Killer....rarely...if ever.
The Toshiba SD-3950/SD-3960 Dvd Player and Sony SA-WM40 Subwoofer come immediately to mind.
I'm sure the Oppo is a great $200 DVD player."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

well i chose the 970 because i wanted a decent universal player for audio reasons, its a bonus that it has a nice picture. giant killer? i guess thats a personal decision. all i know is that the 971 beat out a $3500.00 denon and a $13K esoteric player in a benchmark shooout for picture quality.does that make it a giant killer? the way i see it i cant even come close to the pq and sq for $200.00 until someone shows me a review that says some player that cost less than 1k beats any of the oppos then im of the belieif that yes its one of those rare giant killers. I find video benchmarks to be alot like spec charts. They will tell you how the machine measured, but I have found very few people that prefer their TV set to the video film standard for everyday watching. They like it way more vivid.
Oh yeah, solid state measures better than tubes, & CDs measure better than vinyl too.........its not all in the measurement as personal preference is where the enjoyment lands if you use your gear, not just benchrace it.HT Optoma HD25 LV on 80" DIY Screen, Anthem MRX 300 Receiver, Pioneer Elite BDP 51FD Polk CS350LS, Polk SDA1C, Polk FX300, Polk RT55, Dual EBS Adire Shiva 320watt tuned to 17hz, ICs-DIY Twisted Prs, Speaker-Raymond Cable

Snow, screw the reviews and demo them for your self. The Oppo is a nice unit, check out the PIonner DV-588A. It sell for about $125. I had it for a time and it played SACD and DVD-A amazingly well. Buy both then return one.Carl

At least somebody gets it! I cant tell you how many times I've heard the "it performs better that gear XX times it's price" only to discover after I check it out myself that it was much ado about nothing."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

i dont disagree with you there. i have bought one and i am very happy with it. the only thing i can go on other than the reviews which god knows i have read at least 20 of them. is other peoples oppinions here and other forums and everyone seems to love there oppo regardless of whether its a 970- 971-981. in the electronics section here is several peoples oppinions, http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47311 i took all that into consideration when i bought mine. i tried to figure out which one suited me better for my needs and it was the 970 so i bought it. the general theme seems to be that it was better than whatever player they had before. which was also true for me. a lot of time the hype doesnt actually match the product. this seems to me to be one of those rare times where it does. i am a big believer in research myself and am not an impulse buyer. so when every thread i can find, in every forum i can find, says good things about a product, i take notice. is there better players than the oppos? yes im sure there are but probally not in this price range. I have the same Rcvr (AVR 635) and have been considering the DVD47 DVD player.
http://harmankardon.com/product_detail.aspx?Region=USA&Country=US&Language=ENG&cat=DVD&prod=DVD%2047&sType=C
It (DVD 47) supports DVD-A and SACD and the bass management will match well with the 635 since I think the 635 does not do bass management on the analog inputs but the DVD47 does manage bass on the analog outputs. I would confirm all this because I do not own the DVD 47 and have not seen many reviews on it...
