I was going to guess 1b - studio's. I could be wrong on that though. (they look very similar to my 1b's but black instead of the typical polk walnut\vinyl that was so popular then.

Should have wooden bases about 1-1/2" high to be 1b's.

Edit - and I think we have a winner....
    Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
    Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
    Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
    Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
    Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms)

I am going to pick them up on Tuesday. I will let you know the true identity then.

My thoughts were 1c's until McLoki came back with the edit link he found.

I think either way, I will be happy. This will be my first SDA's. I have Moniter 10a's that I love, so I am sure to be pleased.:D

Both the late run studio 1B and early run studio 1C used that cabinet style. Some of the very earliest 1C's also used the blade/blade interconnect, and then the pin/blade interconnect thereafter.

The 1B and 1C differed in the driver complement and crossovers used. The 1B used MW6509's for all four mid-woofer drivers. The 1C used MW6510's for the SDA drivers and MW6511 for the stereo drivers.

The 1B had two different crossover boards, one each for high and low frequencies. The 1C only had a single crossover board.

They look like my studio 1Cs; gotta love the black look. FYI - mine use the pin/blade cable discussed by DarqueKnight in the previous post. Good luck with your find.

Well, I must say, you guys are correct!!! I got a great deal, and one that will make me smile for years to come.

I have only spent a few hours with my SDA 1c's, but I must say. . . . They are truly special speakers. Even with my Bryston 2bLP at 60w @8ohms, they are very happy and show no signs of distress or coloration. I am a bit disappointed initially with the bass authority and impact from the 1c's. My monitor 10a's seem to have a bit more stability in producing the lowest of octaves.

I am sure that with a more powerful amp (Bryston of course), I will be more than happy with the trade that I have made.

Place them close to the rear wall, 5 or 6 inches away. That will increase your bass response.

I used to use a NAD 2200PE amp with my SDA ICs, waaaay back when I purchased them new - bass response was decent. However, I currently use Odyssey Audio Mono Extremes, and the Odyssey product's high current [>120 amps] seems to mate well with the 1Cs - no bass (or other) issues whatsoever. :D

Adjusting the distance from the rear wall, as discussed by F1nut, will produce various changes / improvements.

    Happy listening!

We're guessing here that it's a 1B because all the dustcaps look the same.

Is there not a serial number on the back?

If it really matters to you...Helen, our resident expert on our vintage speakers, says that you can be sure by pulling one of the drivers. If the label on the back of the driver reads MW6509, you have a 1B. If the label reads either MW6510 or MW 6511, it's a 1C.

I've heard that some Bryston amps aren't common ground amps, somewhere here before. Just to be safe, you might want to check on that before using that amp with those speakers without the special IC that's made for those that want to use non-common ground amps. You speakers must have the pin/blade type IC connectors, too.

    Enjoy!!!
