Help me out with a DAC!

Dont get me wrong I have a large redbook collection I enjoy and I use a high end dac with them or run them with the Tri-Vista which is an outstanding redbook player, but this talk of betamax is not applicable to SACD, alot of redbook disc's would sound like crap on SACD as its just not there on the master tapes and you can tell this easily with the higher sample rate and quantization levels and they can sound just as awful on a quality standard player, I dont buy that 70 % figure though, its arbitrary at best, as a music lover I find lots of SACD titles to enjoy from all the genre's. Since it and DVD-A sound better than redbook to me I use alot of them, then the vinyl then the redbook, redbook is actually more the betamax as servers and ipods are taking over the masses, the high rez scene, well there is promise in these newer formats primarily being pushed for video, if they make a better sounding music disc I will one day buy them as I have never been an early adopter.
Everything I read indicates SACD is going along just fine, with smaller labels getting into producing discs, as with everything else in our great land, the money mongers have their fingers all over SACD and certainly hinder the process, so enter the imports and higher consumer cost in general.
I will continue to work on my vinyl setup as this format has the potential to outdistance any digital format sound presently being produced. You can buy a nice used record for a buck or two or for 100 or 200 bucks, its a crazy mixed up world for Lola, and me as well.
Also, even if the chicks are free, you need money for audio.

The only thing that can come close to SACD is vinyl, but in my shed rig although the vinyl has moments overall the SACD is better.

Also, when the time comes and boy it's coming soon, I will be using the OPPO for more than the CD player. For now, I have all the makings to complete a 2 ch rig. I am in the process of getting a kick butt HT together. So far I have a projector and purchased Antny's current home theater speakers. I plan on having my ears (ear and a half LOL) on the music by tomorrow afternoon.
The HT won't be too far behind. -

What good is SACD when you can't find 70% of what you like available?
Ah, but what is available is glorious. As I understand it a redbook CD is a standard CD.
That is correct. The term comes from the cover color of the spec book for CD's. Had it been purple, I quess we'd have to call it purplebook.Political Correctness'.........defined

Simaudio and Musical Fidelity are a couple of solid companies who offer a digital input with some of their source gear so you can use a squeezebox or other digital source and hook to the fine dacs in these machines. I am sure there are other companies who have thought this out.
excellent thinking by the brass

I wish you all the luck in the world if your going to use the oppo as a source in your 2 channel rig. I'm not saying it can't be done and I'm not trying to discourage you in any way. Just saying that it didn't work for me when I tried to use my Denon 1920 universal player as a source.
Okay, you are leaving me here with my mouth open full of questions. Why (what) didn't it work? Did you have the Denon 1920 transport connected to a good DAC? Are you usinga a disc stabilizer such as the Marigo?
Ya see the other thing here is that if it really doesn't work out in the 2 ch rig it may as the HT source and / or the SACD. If it doesn't work there either, my older son is getting a new player. -

I thought it had something to do with the Redbook woman's magazine. -

I don't totally agree here. The difference my Timbre DAC makes is dramatic and blatantly obvious. The Marigo stabilizer also helps tighten the image and bass as well presenting a more 3-D sound stage but more importantly that digital glass breaking sensation is reduced, with the Timbre DAC that digital grunge and glass breaking is completely gone.
My Timbre DAC takes even the worst case digital recordings such as, the Led Zepplin box set "The Complete Studio Recordings," which really is a fine example of how a recording company can put out a real piece of garbage digital set, even of the greatest music, and running it from a suspect transport through the Timbre DAC it is very very nice to listen to. It changes that digital grungy glass breaking sound into a smooth sounding, analogy, musicality.
I've heard Phil's Ultra DAC and that too really gets rid of that digital crassness but in a different more forward way.
So in my opinion there are DACs out there that can make an analog lover like me want to listen to my CD collection no matter how awful the CD is.
