Well, that's part of it, anyway. My fiance' and I did our usual garage sale outing on Saturday and the first stop (her idea thank goodness) had good results. Wait...spectacular results. I saw the speakers when we were walking up. Funny how that works. So while she was looking at the baby clothes, I took a look. I saw the Polk Audio logo on the front which excited me so I looked on the back to see what they were. Monitor 10B's and a price tag of $3!! Unreal. So I quickly to them I would take those and asked if there happened to be any older stereo equipment since there were speakers. She said yes, that she had some stuff in a box but wasn't sure what to tag it for and didn't know if it would sell. She said there was an EQ and some other stuff. When she came back out, I rummaged thru the box to find an Akai EQ (crud), a Carver C-2 Pre Amp and an M1.0t amplifier! They are in very good shape except there was one knob missing and the power button's plastic button cover was missing on the Pre Amp. Long story short...I ended up getting everything for $20! Speakers for $3, the rest for $17 basically. Wow...just when I thought the garage sale season was over. Definitely one of my better finds. The only one that gets close to that is a Pioneer SX-1980 receiver I bought a few months ago for $10. I didn't think I'd ever get that lucky again! I was proven wrong!

I am listening to them now and I am very impressed. I forgot how good these speakers sound. I am going to buy another M1.0t and maybe a C-1 or C-4000 Pre Amp, a Carver CD and a Tuner just to round out this system. Not that I don't have a ton of other stuff but I thought it would look (and sound) nice together.

What a good weekend.

Actually, she's buying them for 3 different cousins who are due the first 3 months of 2007. Plus, a few different gals she works with. But then again...who knows! We stopped trying there for awhile so maybe a sign is yet to come! hehe.

The SX-1980 was from an Estate Sale back in July...not this past weekend.

Now I'm gettin piss'd. ;) Someone has been getting yard sale deals that are puttin' some of mine to shame. Recent grabs are great but an SX-1980 for $10!!!! Holy crap. You could sell that to a junk dealer for pure metal weight and come out ahead. That is the Pioneer holy grail.

As a matter of fact, I DID sell the SX-1980 after using it for a few months. It was a good sounding, ballsy receiver for an older unit. But the money I made on it helped a) helped pay for a diamond ring for Christmas, and, b) supports me and my "habit". haha. It was kind of cool to say I had owned one. I still have the pictures of it. But, I am glad to have come across the Carver M1.0t and the C-2 Pre Amp. I was on the lookout for a larger amp and was really wanting separates. I'm going to get another M1.0t and a Carver CD, tuner, etc, just to have a complete set. Plus, I love they way they sound!

Next week, I am picking up a McIntosh MC2100 that's in reasonable shape for a couple hundred that I'll fix up, use for awhile, then sell. I also found another nice set of separates for (I'm hoping) about $250. It's a Counterpoint SA-20 amp (220wpc) which is a hybrid Tube/MOSFET amp and a SA-2000 pre amp. I'm kind of excited to get those as well. I know the company is out of business and gone, but, they work and look dang near perfect. My fiance' doesn't mind my habit since I have most everything in my office, anyway. Plus, I pay for it over and over between what I keep versus what I sell (or give to friends). I love this hobby to be able to afford and use equipment that 15 to 20 years (or more) ago, I couldn't afford new.

Are you near DFW? What areas are you garage sale hopping in to find these steals?

I'm too lazy and stick with Craigslist and some regional ebay searches.

It went for around $1000 on Ebay but needed some internal work. I had ordered all the caps for it to redo the power supply and those went with it. It wasn't as mint as some of them out there that get more money. The faceplate was probably a 9 out of 10 but the case maybe a 6. A good re-veneer job and it would be perfect.

I'm kind of in the DFW area...north of. Honestly, that's the first real major deal I've found from a garage sale so far (except the 1980). Most I go to always have the "BPC" stuff and some cheap speakers. So this was a nice change. My best friend and his wife (in my home town in Arkansas) also find things for me, too. Plus, it's turned into a hobby for him now! I have friends in OKC and Tulsa that do the same thing...always have an eye open for stuff and/or they ask older friends they know (or their parents friends...lol). It's funny how things turn up. My office is quite packed with stuff and I even have things in the garage and in the attic. Kind of crowded. My home office closet has 4 pairs of speakers, 4 receivers, 2 EQ's and some other crap in it! Sheesh...what an addiction!

Funny, I went a sale north of DFW and the woman told me some guy had just hauled off some Polk speakers and Carver electronics, but she was afraid she overcharged him. I ended up getting paid $40 to take the Klipschorns and McIntosh tube rig in the basement.
