Any Given Sunday sounds nice in DD 5.1.

What is Independence Day like (where aliens blow up White House, etc.)? Don't own it and don't plan to buy it. Just remember for Pro Logic it was impressive to hear, didn't know if Digitial kicked it up a notch.

That's the one. DD does kick it up a bit. I haven't heard the THX option yet.

The whole concept of Dolby 5.1 is a little misleading since some of the greats have monaural surrounds this is normal in most cases where some of the originals that where produced for the 70mm process like Todd-AO or even the Dolby 70mm types that appeared though the 1970’s 80’s and partly the 1990’s until it was phased out.

So here’s a few Dolby 4.1 mixes that would have appeared in 70mm six-track with “Baby Boom!”

“Cocoon” (1985) got an extraordinary Dolby film mix with plenty of deep low end and good use of monaural surrounds towards the end.

“Alien Nation” (1989) again some splendid isolated sound kept discreetly within the mix monaural surrounds adds good atmosphere in the action moments.

“The Abyss” (1989) and thou it may indicate on the display of the Dolby digital decoder as being Dolby 5.1 it isn’t the film had what’s called “Baby Boom” it had four discreet wide range tracks for left centre right monaural surrounds and two tracks that where played on screen channels 2 and 4.

But the ole Dolby format 42 is virtually retired now except those rare few films out there that some of us want on DVD without any changes done to them what so ever “STAR WARS” original 1977 road show “Baby Boom” not that lame version from last year.
