Hmmmmm....a person takes a nice pair of speakers and destroys them....then wants to save, oh, MAYBE 10 bucks on a pair of drivers? Then cops a 'tude about a little needling?

    Yeah, whatever.

It's a nice pair of speakers, if you want to enjoy good sound, fix them properly. If not, do what you like.

The thing that gets me is, if you have your mind made up on a course of action, why ask for opinions??

Ok, you wanted help, here you go....

Look at the Polk site for the RTi4 under specifications and you will see this:

    Overall Frequency Response 50Hz-27kHz
    Lower -3dB Limit 60Hz

That means you are ok with a 60hz tone to your speakers. They will actually play a 50hz tone but not very well and that is the speakers lower limit. If you try and push lower than that - you will break something.

You went over 2 octaves below that and blew the speaker. I don't care what they can do with no problem in your environment, that is what Polk says they can do. Don't run sine waves lower than 60hz or you will be sorry.

Before you purchase your woofer from parts express - be sure and ask in their forum what level of power it will take and what spl you can expect at 10hz.

    Michael

BTW - welcome to club polk

I hate to tell you this Ben, but this was quite a gentle scolding from the crew here. It used to be much much worse. :D

They are simply voicing their distress over the willfull destruction of a pair of very good speakers.:(

Hopefully, the lesson has been learned. I've noticed that younger people usually DO have to learn the hard way.

At least this wasn't anything that was life threatening like drinking & driving.

That was sarcasm, im only 17 and dont have a job and my parents arent rich like Amulford here. sorry for being poor and having polks. and 39 as in amulfords age. your welcome.

Since you seem to have singled me out, let me set you straight. I am not a rich man. I work hard for what I have, probably much like your father.

You want to listen to music with all kinds of **** kicking bass? Then at least TRY to set yourself up with the proper gear. If you change your dumb **** attitude, you just might get some help.

Now your 17, right? You CAN get a job. I had one at your age. As a matter of fact, when I was 17 I was skinning animals in a slaughterhouse for animal food to earn the money for the things I wanted. I did things that would gag a maggot for money. So don't cry that poormouth BS to me. If you want it you can get it. You just have to want it, and obviously you don't.

What do want me to treat you like? You did something stupid, and asked some dumb **** questions. What are you, special? I don't think so. Now you can be the young man you should be, or the crying child you're acting like. The choice is yours...

    And oh yeah, ben. STFU!!!

    -Thanks Ben.

I singled you out because you stuck out, reread your first unhelpful post to me.
i didnt have the attuitude at first. i was defending myself from these unhelpful and unwelcoming posts.
-im sorry you had to do things you didnt want to for money but im in a different situation, one that isnt as extreme but the fact is, i dont have the money i need and thats that.
-I didnt ask some "dumb ****" questions, you are arrogant. coming at me like some kind of superior mediator. No, im not special but i expected a different attitude on my first post and a new forum. evaluate your own posts to me. what if you were me???

im tired of this. Lets forget it. i'll be back in 2007. I hope you all have a Blessed Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year! Sorry for the flame!

SubSonic - I think this is where you just need to man-up and say "hey, I was doing some stupid sh@t with my speakers, playing around, and I fried them! Thanks to you all for pointing out that although these are great little speakers, they can't handle the amount of bass I like, and I need to be a little more cautious. I'll call Polk CS and see what new drivers cost"

It's not so hard. We've all been in that same spot. And if you want to play around with some PE drivers as replacements, let us know how it works out.

PS: don't join any motorcycle forums if you think you were treated rudely here!

Come on, guys. Give SubSonic a break. Unbelievably, this isn't the only time someone tried to turn an RTi4 into a subwoofer.

Read this for a good laugh. KrazyMoFo makes SubSonic look like Matt Polk's head of engineering. . . and the next William Gates.

NM, I just read the old KrazyMoFo post, and he prefaced it with "stupid question." So, at least he was smart enough to know the stupidity beforehand, where as SubSonic just makes excuses and saying "mistake."

AG, please reread the thread. its obvious i knew that a 10hz signal at 40% gain wouldnt do well for my woofers. and I do know that the human hearing range is 20hz-20khz so no, i wasnt expecting to "hear" 10hz, but i did hear air moving through the ports. Thanks, Smartass.

I think you ought to replace the midwoofers with bass shakers from Parts Express. They could do a pretty mean **** job of shaking the boxes way down to 10Hz. Great bottom end, great top end. Middle, not so good but hey - you cant have everything.

Hehe... humor:p , yea, mom tells me the "real world" is gonna be a biotch.

and yes, bass shakers will give me 10 hz cept i'd have to sit on the cabinets ;)
