How do you get your guests to leave?

Had some friends over yesterday afternoon beginning around 1 pm. The last couple didn't leave until midnight. I was throwing out a bunch of hints -- yawning a lot, changed into my sleepwear, talking about how we have to go to work in the morning, etc. How do you politely encourage your guests to leave at a decent hour?

Thanks.

I just come out and say "hey folk's, we've got to call it a night." Good friends won't be offended, and who cares what other-than good friends think?

    I think I'm getting old and cantankerous...LOL

I'm with Steve. People that I'm friends with know I'm not inherently a rude or mean person (although I play one on TV), so saying "all right folks, I gotta get to bed soon" is perfectly acceptable.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Yeah, I can be straight with my friends, even cuss 'em out if I have to. In this situation, this was a couple from Cali whom we hadn't seen in 5 years. Yes, they are friends, but...So we didn't want to be too rude, but damn...

Start doing The Worm while sobbing uncontrollably.

Trust me.. nobody wants any part of that.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Where we were stationed in Germany, you start to serve orange juice, that means everyone leaves within one hour. Here in the States, you can pull the Eddie Murphy line from "Trading Places" when he stopped and yelled, "Get the *%$& out!"

Friends you haven't seen in five years shouldn't make a difference, just tell them, "It's been great spending time with you again, let's not wait five more years," as you hand them their coats and usher them to the door.

Now that we're well into our forties, nobody sticks around late, they leave at a reasonable hour anyway! :D

I usually start out with "Not to be rude guys but..." That'll do it.

If not, try "Man it's getting late... who's up for some wife swapping? Here I've got a video that'll get you guys in the mood."

Start taking a dump without shutting the bathroom door. If that doesn't clear the house I don't know what will...unless it's a frat party or similar.:D

When I throw parties, I always give a "last call" sort of warning, usually 1 hour before I want people to go home.

If that doesn't work the "Get the F#$* out" would be a last resort.
