Funny story about last night.....

So we went out for my friends birthday to the "Palm" restaurant in Boston. To those of you that have heard of it, you know the quality of this place. Excellent food at a moderately high price.

Anyway, I like steak alot. So, steak was my choice of meat. I am not a fan of steak fat at all so I decided to go with the Filet Mignon, which 2 of my friends seemed to think is a steak for only a woman.

I had it done medium-rare, almost still Moo'ing and it was absolutely delicious. With the good bottle of red wine we got, it was a great meal.

Well my friends thought it would be funny to carry the "girly" conversation outside the restaurant to the bars we went to and wanted me to start ordering feminine drinks. Absolutely not.

So, my question is, is Filet really not a guy's steak? Personally, I don't care, it was really good, lots of flavor and I enjoyed it and definately would order it again. But I am curious if their arguement had any validity!

I tried looking up online a "man's vs. woman's" choice in steak but couldn't find anything.

What do you guys think?

All in all, it was a great night out, I went home highly intoxicated(the sure sign of a good night).

Filet Mignon is perfectly fine many guys eat them, shoot I used to eat it a lot. Now when I go out I usually order a rib eye cost a little less and a lot more filling and still a great tasting hunk o' meat. I think the only thing girly about it is the size.

Interesting you say that because my 16 ounce Filet(biggest on the menu) was $38.00 for just the piece of meat and their 28 ounce porterhouse was $52.00 for just the piece of meat.

How do you have a girly piece of STEAK? You're at a fancy restaurant paying fifty bucks for a steak, if they're OK with that I don't see how the actual cut of meat makes a difference. What are your friends, 13?
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Oh im not really worried, cause im gonna order what I like to eat no matter what. I was just curious to whether their claims that a Filet is a "dainty tasteless steak" had any validity

Filet all the way, for sure! I always get a filet when I get steak. It's a bummer that it's usually the most expensive. :( But, I don't like any fat on my steak.

Actually, looking up "filet mignon" in the dictionary, one finds that it is derived from the French:

"filet": a young girl or unmarried woman
"mignon": diminutive, small in stature or size.

So "filet mignon" refers to a young girl, and a small young girl at that.

So it seems that the only thing that possibly would be less manly to order in a restaurant would be sushi.

Believe me, this piece of meat was still Moo'ing.

First cut with the knife the nice red blood juice went all over the plate. The girls that were with us found that disgusting so just for added effect I dipped all my sides, broccoli, mushrooms, and mashed potato into the nice red juice.

16 ounce filet for 38 bucks is not bad.
i think if you you don`t like the fat in the meat, you did right.

Filet Minons come from the best, softest, juciest part of the cow! If you have to gnaw your way through a tough piece of beef just to prove you are a man, then you need to get some counselling!

Otherwise, tell your friends to grow the hell up!

Anthony, I found your comment somewhat offensive! Do you call the woman in your life a **** just because she is a woman?

    Medium Rare = Still Moo'ing ??? ... Hardly ...

Somewhere between RARE and steak tar tar is how my wife orders it ... which I typically refer to as medium RAW ...

Personally I prefer mine somewhere between rare and medium rare i.e. with the center no longer chilly ...

I never heard of such nonsense! A girly steak? The Palm is a great place for a steak. Did you get one of those 3 to 6 pound lobsters on the side?

Not sure about your area but I know around this way it is often very difficult to get a chef to cook a piece of steak less than medium rare due to health issues.

No lobster for me, but we did get the shrimp app(Shrimp Bruno?), which was delicuous.

All in all, I liked all the food there and definately would go back again.

Pittsburgh style is the only way to eat beef in my book, that is burnt on the outside raw in the middle. When I stick it with a fork, I want to chase it around the room.

The only time I've ever had an issue with a restaurant (PA or NJ) cooking meat less than medium is when ordering ground meat, burgers, chopped sirloin etc. They have to mention the possibility of getting sick for their own protection. Other than the vocal warning, I've never had a restaurant refuse a Pittsburgh style steak. Neither have I ever become sick from eating less than medium beef.

I've ordered bloody rare 2/3 lb. burgers from Fudruckers and they never mention ecoli or saminela or his brother salminela.:D
