Had to work at 9:00 this morning. Boss showed up around noon. Had to drive about 45 min. To letter some trucks, and put dot numbers on them. Got pulled over on the way home. I was doing 67 in a 55 and the officer said he wasn't going to pull me over until he saw that the plate was expired. It was supposed to be renewed back in may. I over heard my boss saying he was not going to pay for the ticket. pretty nice huh. My boss is and ****, he told me almost a year ago he was going to give me a raise still have not seen it. Was also told when minimum wage went up we would get a raise, that didn't even happen.
So anybody in norther mi. looking for some one who can do almost anything.

The situation you're in sucks and it looks as though your boss is a very small man.

So what did you get ticketed for? Speeding, unregistered motor vehicle or both? I'm trying to figure out why your boss doesn't feel he should pay up.
I mean, I do sympathize with your situation but I could see him not wanting to pay for a "speeding ticket" as he probably didn't order you to speed as part of your job. I know the small company (20+ employees) I work for will not pay for employees' traffic tickets like speeding, running a stop sign or red light etc. but will pay for all tickets that are due to some kind of neglect on their part such as a lapsed registration.
If you only got ticketed for the lapsed registration it can become sticky (at least to your boss) because to him you brought a halt to his little scam of the DMV by speeding and bringing it to the attention of an LEO.
Did you realize the registration was way over due before hand? If yes, you assumed a risk just driving the van at all (which makes your boss more of a s--t head if this is what he expects you to drive for work) and if this knowledge didn't keep your speed down closer to say like 60 then you accepted more risk.
Yes, your boss is cheap. He could likely do better for you and although I know it may not seem it right at this time but you could do better than the likes of him.
Yes, he should pay a lapsed registration fine. Yes, he should be upset at the thought of paying a speeding fine and no a lot of employers wouldn't. -
the ticket was for registration. The officer said he was not going to pull me over, because I was going down hill when he clocked, but once I passed where he was sitting, he saw the plate and pulled me over. Boss though he had the vehicle registered. He though it was taken care of already. I think his car is in his dads name, and the van is in his name. the tabs on the van expired in may of 06, the car is oct of 07. He says i never got pulled over for it. As far as looking for a new job, I've been looking since before summer for a new one, I've put applications in every where I can think of. Michigans economy suck right now, It's easier to find a jew in a catholic church right now.

Registration, huh? Hand that f#ckin ticket to his ****, it ain't your job to register HIS vehicle. Is the ticket made out to you?
-
yes the ticket is made out to me
-
Registration ticket then huh? Any decent boss would suck it up and pay. If he doesn't.... well then, he just plain sucks.
-
Not sure about where you live, but everywhere I've ever lived, once you get the registration taken care of, they usually dismiss the ticket. So get your **** boss to get the registration up to date and find the officer that wrote the ticket and ask him if he'll dismiss the ticket or if it has to be done by a judge."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

Noel,
That's an idea for sure as it often does work. But... It usually has a better chance of working out in your favor if the registration has somewhat recently lapsed. The registration in this case expired when? Back in May? It's worth a try but having had a father-in-law who was a local judge for about fifteen years I know the time line here could make it a hard sell. -
Go to court and give them his name and address. They should let you off since it's not your vehicle as long as they get someone's name that's more responsible for said offense (owner of the vehicle) and then you can quit.comment comment comment comment. bitchy.

Would love to quit, but can't afford to. I have been looking for a job for a while, It's slow up here in the middle of Michigan. I really don't want to more out of the county I am in the local schools are really good, Tons of wilderness within 10 min. in any direction. The people are friendly. -
Unless the state DOT laws are different in MI than PA, the registration is HIS responsiblilty. If you got a ticket for speeding then you are responsible but if the ticket is for an expired registration that is his responsibility, period. The only reason your name is on the ticket is because the police officer has to identify the driver or else the ticket would be invalid.
I would definetely go to the police department and ask about how you should handle the problem beings that it is not your vehicle. They will lead you in the right direction. -
I was already planning on calling the courts and seeing what I have to do. I really do not need the points on my record right now. And the money to pay said ticket is another story.

I don't see how you could get points on your driving record. . . this is not a moving violation, it is an expired registration. Technically, you should be able to hand the ticket over to your boss and be done with it, it is totally his responsibility and he will be the one on record as the owner.
I would still check with the police department though just to relieve any responsibility you have for driving an auto with expired tags. -
From a legal standpoint, (as far as I know) in NY the driver assumes full responsibility for a vehicle when it's operated on public highways. It doesn't matter who's name the vehicle is in.
However from a moral standpoint, this still doesn't mean the boss shouldn't pick up the tab for the ticket. It's just the right thing to do, period. If he can't come to this realization, then he's just a big ****-hat.
EDIT to explain NY's reasoning as far as I'm aware of:
Why would you assume responsibility for the motor vehicle when you get behind the wheel and drive onto a public highway even though it's not yours?
Because you as the operator of the vehicle made the final decision to operate it. In all likelihood, no one put a gun to your head and forced you to make that decision, so it's all in your hands. You may not have any control over how the owner takes care of the vehicles' physical condition or legal condition IE: inspection, insurance, registration, title, or whatever, but you do have control over operating the vehicle or not. The state is not concerned with whether or not the operator was aware of the the legal standing of the vehicle either. IE: You get stopped and tell the officer "But I didn't know the inspection, insurance, or registration was lapsed or that the tire(s) were bald etc." You can tell it to the judge and only hope he takes it easy on you and hope the owner takes care of the fines and court costs involved. It is up to the operator to find out about the legal standing of the vehicle before making the decision to operate it on a public highway. -
In PA the owner of the car has complete responsibility. A case in point . . . if a person drives a car drunk and gets into an accident, the driver gets a DUI, but the owner is liable for any liability damage done by the car, and in most cases is responsible for out of pocket expenses because insurance companies in PA don't have to pay on DUI damage. The owner of the car cannot sue the driver because the owner of the vehicle has complete responsibility for the auto.
In Philadelphia, if an auto's registration tags or inspection is expired, that car will be booted and towed to an impoundment yard until the owner, (not the person who drove it or parked it), who is responsible for getting the car out of impoundment, pays the storage, and fines and gets the proper registration or inspection completed.
Your boss would be totally responsible in PA for that ticket, unless speeding was indicated on it. I find it hard to believe that you would be responsible for someone elses vehicle even in Michigan. -
Well here in MI. It's my responsibility since I was driving its my bad. My wife called the secretary of state help line and they told her to have me dipute the ticket which I will do. They said depending on the judge they may wave the ticket( shoot I don't need a judge, I can wave the ticket. Grab one end and move my hand, if only it was that easy.) My boss sucks. I will not drive the van again until he takes care of it and if he wants to fire me for it, I'll see his **** in court.
-
Right on Brother!!! You do not have to drive an illegal vehicle I don't care what state you are in,;) unless you are drunk and in a state of denial.:D

Got to work this morning and the bosses woman said he was going to be late, he was not feeling to hot. Then she told us that he went in the van to find a screwdriver, and found a present with his knee. I guess some time between sat. and last night some one took a **** in his van and he crawled right into it. Gotta love the way karma works out. Just wish I would have thought about doing it myself. So I thank who ever did it.
So I guess if you keep treating people like ****, you eventualy get **** on.:D
