"Student leaders at a California college have touched off a furor by banning the Pledge of Allegiance at their meetings, saying they see no reason to publicly swear loyalty to God and the U.S. government.

The move by Orange Coast College student trustees, the latest clash over patriotism and religion in American schools, has infuriated some of their classmates -- prompting one young woman to loudly recite the pledge in front of the board on Wednesday night in defiance of the rule.

"America is the one thing I'm passionate about and I can't let them take that away from me," 18-year-old political science major Christine Zoldos told Reuters.

"The fact that they have enough power to ban one of the most valued traditions in America is just horrible," Zoldos said, adding she would attend every board meeting to salute the flag.

The move was led by three recently elected student trustees, who ran for office wearing revolutionary-style berets and said they do not believe in publicly swearing an oath to the American flag and government at their school. One student trustee voted against the measure, which does not apply to other student groups or campus meetings.

The ban follows a 2002 ruling by a federal appeals court in San Francisco that said forcing school children to recite the pledge was unconstitutional because of the phrase "under God." The U.S. Supreme Court struck down the ruling on procedural grounds but left the door open for another challenge.

"That ('under God') part is sort of offensive to me," student trustee Jason Ball, who proposed the ban, told Reuters. "I am an atheist and a socialist, and if you know your history, you know that 'under God' was inserted during the McCarthy era and was directly designed to destroy my ideology."

Ball said the ban largely came about because the trustees didn't want to publicly vow loyalty to the American government before their meetings. "Loyalty ought to be something the government earns through performance, not through reciting a pledge," he said.

Martha Parham, a spokeswoman for the Coast Community College District, said her office had no standing on the student board and took no position on the flag salute ban.

"If their personal belief is that they don't want to say the Pledge of Allegiance, the district certainly isn't going to dictate what they do," she said.

More than 28,000 students attend the community college, located in conservative Orange County, California, south of Los Angeles.

Sophomore Chris Belanger, one of several students who attended the meeting to support keeping the pledge, waved an American flag and accused the board of "radical views and anti-Americanism."

    Deport the dumbasses...

Imigrants have to plledge alligiance, is that immoral?

Under God? If your an athiest, it is a meaningless pledge anyway. It would be like having to pledge loyalty to pink and green unicorns would be for me, I'd feel stupid doing it, but it wouldn't threaten my "ideology".
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

" A government of the people, by the people and for the people..."

Seems they failed American history in elementary school. They obviously fail to grasp the simple concept that they are as responsible for what goes on in this country as the government is. If you don't like the way the government works...VOTE! Being an arogant snot and pissing off the rest of the school ain't earning them any browny points.

The funny thing is he admits he's a socialist... which means he wants government to basically control everything and dole out money equally regardless of deservedness.... yet he finds orally reciting a pledge offensive. Um, what?

If the student body voted these kids into office knowing what they did or did not want, then what's the argument after the fact?

Sounds like they don't like the government that's been in power........welcome to reality.

I don't see how it offends military personnel, but rather elected personnel.

College kids. Sometimes dumber than a rock. I'd never pledge allegiance
to the government, but to America, YES!!!! Government is run by people,
many with their own agendas, but the ideas written in the constitution
are a wonderfull thing. These kids are the kind that would shred the law
and what it stands for. They would beat you up with the letter of the law
without understanding the spirit behind it. Too many current lawyers
    do that now.

If the current administration pisses them off, all they have to do is wait a couple of years, then VOTE!!!

Somewhere on Dennis Prager's website, he explains this phenomena. He speaks of it at least once a week on his radio show. It is the profs. and teachers that support that blather. I am not speaking from experience here I am repeating what I hear and read of Dennis Prager. I respect his opinions, that is why I am not afraid to quote him.

I was thinking the same thing. He really doesn't understand the ideology that he supports. Ample evidence these punks are pure idiots. I respect his right to express his ideas. Funny thing is under a socialist government he would have no right to express his own ideas.

He's just trying to piss off people in general. Geez, it's already an option, not a requirement to say the thing. Why ban it? And when do people say the pledge in college anyway?

I'm all for everything US of A!!! Well, except for the whole God thing. I'm an atheist but that's my choice. You know, the thing all of us Americans have. Choice. So my question is, if we came to these lands to start a country with FREEDOM OF RELIGION, how is it if you're not with the majority, you should be kicked out? What happened to the freedom of religion part? Just decide, "Eh, if you don't agree with me, **** OFF!" Is that so? I'm a crazy proud American but I'm also an atheist. Does that mean I can't be against anything religious? Freedom of religion means I can choose to not have one. So why is it bad to go against the grain to get your opinion out?

Freedom of religion means I can choose to not have one.

Not exactly. The founding fathers believed in freedom of religon, not no religon. They referred to God countless times. That's not to say you can't choose not to believe in a God of your understanding, but that is not freedom of religon.

Do you not handle legal tender? I'm sure you do, so do you cross out the word God on that tender since it offends you so?

Bottom line, those students are nothing but disrespectful to the country they live in and in my book that's wrong.

Most of the left ideology lives on fantasy ideas that don't exist in the real world. Academia is a perfect example of people who like to NOT live in the real world. They have Utopian visions about living in a huge commune, but as yet have no actual experience that tells them "oh... there's actually more to it." Professors do propagate this because their entire LIFE is in academia. You just can't live in a world of books and intellectualism and pretend you know how the world works.

Age has a lot to do with it. My dad used to say a lot of stuff that didn't make sense.
As I got older, things would happen to elighten me. I look back and say, "damn, I was ignorant".
My personal opinion is that you don't know anything till your at least 25.
At double that, I know just enough to be dangerous.
We spend too much time talking about what's wrong with the country,
yet do little to change it.
