I have had a pair of Cerwin Vega's and on two different receivers and I was not happy with the sound of these speakers. They were hooked up to a jvc HTIB and my Yamaha(used for music, TV, and HT). Well I hooked them up in my office to my two channel set up. The setup is really basic old Pioneer Elite receiver(1996), DVD player and Cerwin Vegas. Well they sound great on this system. Does anyone have any idea why they would sound better on this receiver? Could it be speaker placement? Size of room?

A lot of variables to consider. Room acoustics could be the biggest culprit / contributor. I don't think you'll find many here that consider CV's to be a decent speaker (myself included). It isn't about what I, or anyone else, think. If you dig 'em that's the only thing that matters. :)

I've owned three pair of Cerwin Vega's in my short time in this hobby. The thing to consider with them is that they are bass monsters. I found the bass to overpower the midrange and tweeters and muffled the sound. Not a big fan as my tastes in music has changed.

Yeah but when you were young they were amazing or so you thought.
In one condo I had a pair of CV 15's and a pair of CV 12's. Of course the Sony Receiver could not handle this.

Actually, the reason that I got rid of them is because I did not like the way they sounded compared to other speakers in their price range. I much prefer Polk and JBL (although a lot of members will disagree on this one) over anything that Cerwin Vega makes. Additionally, the quality of Cerwin Vegas has gone drastically downhill since the 1990's. Just my .02 cents.

That'd be midbass monsters ;) Accuracy isn't what their known for. Booming muddiness at it's finest / party speakers imo. just my $.02 :)

I had a set in the late 80's. I remember them sounding good, but I was a teenager and my opinion might not be the same today. At 16 it was a big deal to go from small EPI's to 4ft. CV's. Bigger was better back then. I can't even remember what model they were.

I had a set in the mid-late 80's as well. They had a 12" woofer, dual 4 or 5" midranges and a horn tweeter. (they were also 98db efficient.)

I thought they sounded awesome. When I was in college they absolutely ruled as great party speakers. Granted they are not known as good for critical listening, but if you want to put music all over a quad with over 100 people dancing and talking - Cerwin Vega ruled. Not the most accurate speaker I ever owned (or the worst) but almost all my memories of them in use are good ones.
