I have a 55" HD wide screen, a DVD player, Tivo and a cable box. I want to put a better audio system that will allow me to use the system for music as well as to enhance my DVD and TV experiences.

I don't want to have to spend a lot, or anything for that matter, on install but I want something that I can integrate all of my equipment into.

Any suggestions?

    I assume you will need everything -

    Front Speakers
    Center Channel
    Rear speakers (5.1 for now)
    Subwoofer
    Reciever (or amp/preamp)
    all cables and wiring to make it happen.

    What is your budget and preferences? (5.1, 7.1, 2 channel with SDA speakers) Amp/Preamp ok or would you prefer an AVR? Used ok or do you really want new?

    What speakers do you like? Are you really 50-50 for music and movies? We can spend as much as you let us, it all comes down to budget (and the sound you want of course).

    Yes, I probably need everything.
    Usage is about 80% TV for wife. She complains the TV speakers are not that good. Even though I have tweaked the sound, she has difficulty with voices.
    I'd prefer only three speakers, including a subwoofer, so I don't have to wire rear speakers.
    I was in a Tweeters and they recommended a pair of Polk speakers, a subwoofer and a Yamaha receiver.
    I don't want floor speakers and my wife loves the look of the cubes from Bose. I was fine with the Polk speakers. The reputation is terrific and I'm in Maryland too.

    Probably should have described the room:

    Family room that opens into dining area. 20 x 20 is main room area.

    A pair of RT4's or Monitor 30's, an entry level receiver(like a Denon 1507), and an entry level sub(PSW10) could get within your budget.

    Front speakers: $200-$260
    Subwoofer: $200
    Receiver: $329
    Cables: $50-$75

    Total Price: $780-$865

    For a little cheaper receiver that does most of the same functions, you can check out a refurbished Denon from www.ecost.com, specifically this page: http://www.ecost.com/ecost/search/search.asp

    You might also check out the surroundbar, with subwoofer, as an alternative to the RT4's. This will give you really good surround sound and I don't think the music will be that bad either.
