I have been slowly putting my system together over the last 2 years. I am a full time student and saving money to get engaged. Right now I have an Oppo DVD player and a Philips DVD player to choose from when playing CD's. Now all I need this player to do is to play CD's maby even SACD but just CD's is fine. I do not NEED another DVD player. Silver or black colored units would work perfect. My max I can spend is $300.00 but that can be a used unit off the Gon or the Bay whichever. I have been reading up on tube players and some say they make a world of difference some say it is minute. Which ever way, my goal is to obtain a player that sounds TWICE as good as my 5 year old Philips DVD player. Fast forward and Reverse would be nice on the front because I am usually standing up when listening because I am getting ready in the morning (not holding the remote).
I have been looking at Rotel, more specifically an older unit that is huge and black and weighs in at 20lbs. I believe it is the RCD-991 unit. Something that big must sound twice as good as what I have got. Any ideas or suggestions would be great because I just don't know what to but and I can not just go check out a bunch of players at botique stores.... I live in Nebraska. Used is just fine and I do not even have to have a remote. Please help me figure this one out.

I have a used NAD C542 cdp that is in like new condition with the box, remote, and manual. It does HDCD if you are interested. I'd give it a 9/10 only because it's about 10 months to a year old..no nicks or scratches! I'm selling because I now have a Jolida cdp. $350 shipped double boxed. Retails for $499.00.

Mybe you'd be better off saving up a little dough and then look for a solid CDP. Here's another link

The best changer available today is the Rotel RCC-1055. It is very close to the sound quality of the Rotel RCD-1072 which is a very good single disc player (I could hear no difference between the two of them).

Seconded. It's built like a brick sh*thouse and the sound quality is amazing. The bonus would be the ability to upconvert DVDs to the moon and play HD-DVDs.

Some judicious searching can find this for under $400.

I was looking into a "budget" CDP some time ago and I checked out the Azur 640, Music Hall 25.2, Onix XCD-99, the Rotel RCD-1070, as well as a Parasound Ultra 2000 DAC paired with my Kenwood CDP. The best of the bunch were the Onix and the Rotel. I didn't notice a clear winner in SQ between the Rotel vs Onix. The Rotel (used) was more expensive. The Onix cost less and came with a 3 year warranty. No brainer imo.

The XCD-99 isn't as good as any tube CDP I've heard but tubes are a bit more money. Hope this helps :)

Thanks again everyone but I think, at this point, I will use what I have and save my bucks for a home theater outfit to pair with my new plasma (Panasonic 42"). I'll be asking for advice on that in the near future as this is certainly a friendly and helpful forum.

    cheers
