I want some new music, so I'm looking for a few recommendations. Listed below are the areas of music that I listen to and some examples. Feel free to recommend specific albums of the ones listed below, too. I certainly don't have them all. Thanks!

- rock (DMB, Boston, Metallica, Staind, Goo Goo Dolls, Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, U2)
- pop (BNL, Phil Collins, '80's Madonna, early '90's Maria Carey)
- jazz (Rippingtons, Dianna Krall, Coltrane, Brubeck)
- big band (Severinsen)
- classical (Kunzel/Pops, 1812, Planets, Copland)
- soundtracks (Gladiator, Titanic, Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Kunzel/Pops, Braveheart)

Rock - Check out Down's "NOLA" and DownII. I highly reccommend Tool as well. Lateralus is a spectacular album. Alice In Chains, Primus, A Perfect Circle

Classical - I'm a Danny Elfman Fan (these also fall in the soundtrack cat.) Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and anything else done by Danny Elfman.

I am into a lot of different types of music, like most of us here. I basically like all you 2 have mentioned. I have a lot of respect for original sounds though. There is a band out of Chicago called Liquid Soul that plays some of the best tunes I've heard in a long time. They play a jazz, blues, funk, hip-hop brand of music. They have 3 cd's out right now and all are stellar.

Another big Danny Elfman fan here. I think he's a musical genius. He's got a couple compilation albums that are pretty good.

Another really good band that has a small resemblance to the DMB is the Flectones. Bela Fleck is awesome on the guitar, and Victor Wooten is like the the best bass guitarist alive. The "Live Art" album is way good. No lyrics, but great music.

I was looking at Bela Fleck last night, actually. I did get a chance to listen to the second disc of "Live Art" and liked it very much. What would be a good starting disc for them? "Greatest Hits?" Thanks!

Is his "Music for a Darkend Theater: Volume I" album any good? It looks like Volume II (double disc) is a better one, though. Thanks.

    I would recommend:

Dada - Puzzle, one of my all time faves (even Matt Polk recommends it)

Sunvolt - Trace, kinda folk rock-ish. Drown got quite a bit of radio play in the mid 90's

Chris Rea - Road to Hell, a must have. Kinda Lou Rawls/Pink Floyd thing going on there

Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Sister Sweetly

Freddy Jones Band - North Avenue Wakeup Call (maybe out of print but if interested, I could copy it for you)

Peter Murphy - Cascade (Deep was more commercially successful because of 'Cuts You Up' but Cascade was, IMO, a better album)

    Try those...

After listening to clips from you guys' recommendations and then cross-checking that with what BMG actually carries, here's the list I came up with:

    - Van Halen 3-pack (I, II, 1984)
    - Chuck Mangione (Greatest Hits or Finest Hour -- which one?)
    - Sarah McLachlan (Surfacing -- any others?)
    - Nickelback (Silver Side Up -- is The State as good?)
    - Sheryl Crow (Sheryl Crow -- what about The Globe Sessions?)
    - Bela Fleck & the Flecktones (Greatest Hits or Live Art -- which one? Any others?)

Here are the ones that I liked that BMG didn't carry:
    - Dada (Puzzel)
    - Al DeMeola (interesting, I'll have to listen to some more clips)
    - Lorenna Mckinnitt (interesting, I'll have to listen to some more clips)
    - Danny Elfman (Music for a Darkend Theater: Volume II)

    Aaron,

I have both "music for a darkened theater"s. I like the music on the first one better, but the second one is recorded better. It's got less noise and a larger dynamic range. However they're both really good.

As far as Bela Fleck goes, Live Art is actually the only one I own, but it's one of my favorites.

I have the Globe Sessions from Sheryl crow on a DTS CD. It didn't do much for me.

And Surfacing is a great Sarah McLachlan album. Fumbling towards Excstacy is also good.

I listened to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers "Caravan," and it's killer. If I recall, on the last track one of the trumpet players gets way up there. It's so amazing that I can only shake my head and laugh. I've heard a little bit of Bill Evans, but it didn't do it for me. Neither did Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" or the Django album I heard. I guess I don't care for much of the classic jazz. However, I really do like Dave Brubeck's "Time Out" and John Coltrane's "Giant Steps."

Hey, speaking of soundtracks, has anyone heard the "Lord of the Rings" soundtrack? Any good? I also heard the Episode II soundtrack was good. I thought the music was good in the theater, which is something that I don't typically pay attention to.

But I would have to say that most if not all of Dream Theater's work is pretty damn good. I'm not afraid to admit that they are my favorite band.:)

I have 6th row, smack dab in the middle, for the Aug 21st Kings X-Dream Theater-Joe Satriani concert here in Clearwater FL. I saw John Petrucci and Joe Satriani there last year, but I bet this is better.

    Flason enjoy the concert!

I would love to see Kings X in concert. I love Tabors vocals and Pinnicks (sp?) strange bass riffs. PLus the fact that Satriani and DT are there just makes it better. Never saw DT or Joe in concert either.....damn Iowa!:(
