Just returned from a live gig with Al and gang. The best guitarist I've heard live, in any genre, in 40 years of concert going.
I have to admit that I assumed a lot of his album work was "studioed-up". Absolutely not. He is the instrument. And, I've never seen any guitarist that loves to play like he does.
Gumbi Ortiz, who has played with Al for 17 years, is in the top three of all percussionists I've had the pleasure of hearing. Simply amazing.
Damn!

Blue, Al D is an all time favorite. If you havent had a chance, check out when he played with Return to Forever. (my opinion) the baddest band ever, if you are into hard core fusion. Al Dimeola - guitar, Chick Corea key boards, Stanly Clark - bass, lenny white - drums. Doesn't get much better than that.
Also a nice dvd concert is a "Rite of Strings" with Al, Stanly Clark and Jon Luck Ponty. Nice concertTV...............Hitachi 42hdS52a plasma (sexy one with the swival)

Thanks, I'll check out the DVD.
I've been a jazz fan for several decades, but really never focused on Al until introduced to "Kiss My Axe" by Dave James on the forum. I have several, earlier than Return to Forever, LPs by Chick. But, I gravitated more to brass and reed front men with Miles Davis, Stanley Turentine, Grover Washington, Jr., David Sanborn, etc. I've seen Lee Ritnour, Eric Gale, John McLaughlin, Larry Carlton, and Robben Ford (he's really quite an accomplished jazz guitarist.) Al is in another league altogether, IMO. -
Amazingly enough just picked up "Consequence of Chaos" friday and gave it a listen that evening. Good stuff!
Slight derail- Mike while you're at it look for this DVD "One Night with Blue Note" a 1985 reunion of BN artists Blakey,Burrell, Hancock, Jimmy Smith, Turrentine, Washington Jr., to name a very few. -
One of my very favorite. He smokes on the ax.

My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
Thanks Dave, I'll find that as well.
I bought the new CD at the gig and haven't had a chance to get through it yet. The gig was the only live jazz set I've attended where all the musicians worked from sheet music scores. You talk about tight!
The studio musicians for the album (including Chick, Steve Gadd, Barry Miles and John Patitucci) are obviously too expensive to tour with for the new album. But, the lineup he put together--including a DYN-O-MITE, 24 year old drummer and a bass player from Baltimore--were top shelf musicians. Mario Parmisano (Brazilian pianist featured on the album) is touring with him and, of course, Gumbi.
The good news is that I finally got to see Al in person. The bad news is, after playing guitar 40 years, I'm ready to quit. I felt retarded when I picked up my Les Paul this morning after witnessing genius. -
