I can't watch either of them, but I know it's a huge loss for his family, my prayers go out too them.

Yeah. Jeff Corwin is kinda corny and ****-ish. He's defintely not a replacement for the croc hunter.

There's a British dude that's pretty wild & crazy. Don't know his name, though.

It raises an interesting question on what situations you put yourself in, if you have a wife and 2 kids at home. Is it fair, to your family, to put your life at risk so much? Regardless of how staged the scenes were, you eff with the bull, you're going to get the horns (or however that goes). I think he did a lot of good, getting people interested in wildlife, and then wrestling said wildlife.

Jeff Corwin educates, but doesn't seem like his kids will be father-less one day. Maybe I'm being sentimental because we just had our second child in June, I can't imagine not being around for them.

His wife was into it just as much as he was, and I'm sure his kids will be as well.

Yup, aside from the TV stuff, his wife is actually taking over most of his business interests, including managing their zoo. They were partners in almost all of his business ventures, so I can't really say it was "irresponsible".
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Yeah, and he died by sting ray, which is what -- the 3rd time it's ever happened in Australia? Hell they let you swim with giant numbers of them on any cruise worth it's salt. They're just not dangerous.

All I have to say is that he didn't die by any dangerous animal he messed around with, so saying he would have isn't fair to him.

Plus, as others have said -- that's how he met his wife. She was visiting his family's zoo, and then they were married 6 months later.

I think he was an idiot dangling his kid around while playing with crocs, but I'm sure we've all done dumb things with little kids like putting them on skis in Colorado and watching them go down a giant hill. Gotta look at it from the perspective he grew up in. He was raised in the same environment as he's raising his kids. Can't really fault him for that.

I like the South African guy, Austin Stevens, the "Snakemaster". He is hardcore. He actually got bit by a cobra on camera, was rushed to the hospital and was back out 24 hours later (according to the show).

As far as the risks are concerned, no different than a race driver, high steel worker, lumberjack (the most dangerous profession according to several sources) and many many more. Every day people go to work with the risk they will not return. This may have been his passion....but it WAS his job. Some may say the risks were too great...but he knew what he was doing and because of that fact the risks were manageable. This was a set of curcumstances that were one in a million. I read where it was such a small area that was lethal, that an inch either way would have been non-fatal. It was simply his time to go.

this is morbid.. but i wonder how long it will be before the video of Irwin getting his **** kicked by the Stingray is all over the internet? you can't blame the Stingray. it was only going into defense mode.. as any animal would do.

But damn... pretty accurate aim wouldn't you say?

You'll never see that video. I think it's a freakin' conspiracy. The croc hunter probably pissed off a big media exec, they killed him, and they're using this lame stingray story as a cover-up.

CROCODILE HUNTER DEATH TO BE BROADCAST?

LATEST: The footage of late Australian naturalist STEVE IRWIN being killed by a stingray could be shown on TV. Charismatic Irwin, dubbed the Crocodile Hunter after his internationally acclaimed TV show, died yesterday (04SEP06) while diving on Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Irwin was filming for a new documentary when he lost his life, and his cameraman shot the moment when the stingray's barbed tail stabbed the legendary conservationist through the heart. The tapes are currently being held by Queensland police - but Irwin's family are determined to respect his last wishes and allow the harrowing footage to be broadcast. Irwin once insisted, "My number one rule is to keep that camera rolling. Even if it's shaky or slightly out of focus, I don't give a rip. "Even if a big old alligator is chewing me up I want to go down and go, 'Crikey!' just before I die. That would be the ultimate for me." An insider tells British newspaper the Daily Star, "This is exactly what Steve would have wanted. He knew the dangers and was totally up for the cameras to get everything."

Steve was the main reason that Animal Planet became one of the most watched cable networks in my house. He will be very much missed and I certainly feel for his wife and family.

He died doing what he loved. In that respect, I hope that we can all be that lucky.

I just realized that even in the end, Steve educated most of us on stingrays. I certain have learned more about stingrays in the last couple of days than before.

I just wish he didn't have to die to inform us about stingrays.

Actually they were debating whether to give him a country burial ceremony. His father has stated that he does not want Steve to be given this honor. Steve's father's reasoning is because he feels Steve would not have wanted it. Steve always wanted to be treated as a "regular bloke". Giving him such a ceremony would have elevated him to a stature that Steve would have not liked.

The last I have heard is the decision of the ceremony has been given to the family. It makes no difference to me. I will not remember his funeral 10 years from now. However I will remember his dedication to his work and introducing the world to sights most of us had just heard about.

I agree. I thought about this a lot yesterday. Had it not been the stingray, it would have been the elusive red-breasted ****-****, or the equally venomous 2 peckered ****-mouse (I'll bet those animals live in Wikipedia somewhere...) Anyway, something would have done it.

On further thought, if everyone took my approach, Columbus wouldn't have stepped foot on that ship, and astronauts sure as hell wouldn't have strapped themselves to a rocket. My sister-in-law is a smoke jumper, and there's a lot of people out there that can thank her and her co-workers for saving their houses, after jumping from planes near the fire.

And he did a lot for everyone else's children opening their eyes to nature. Hats off.
